And perfectly bingeable.

It's hard for critics to find consensus on comedy shows, mostly because humour is so – well, personal. One man's eye-roll is another man's spit-take. But every once in a while a series rolls around that finds universal acclaim.

Here are 7 recent comedy shows that impressed critics enough to earn 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

  1. Mo

You wouldn't think the life of a Palestinian refugee would make for good punchlines, but Mo– while definitely tiptoeing up to the drama line – proves that comedy can come from any situation. Mo Amer plays the main character (based on his own self), a fish out of water in Houston, Texas.

The Rotten Tomatoes consensus reads: 'Frequently hilarious while possessing an absorbing sense of place, 'Mo' is a thoughtful depiction of the immigrant experience that is light on its feet.'

  1. The Letdown

If the life of a refugee is a surprising source of comedy, then probably so is the struggles of a new mother trying to breastfeed. The Letdown is a hilarious and realistic look at new motherhood, complete with crying jags, mommy brain, weirdos at baby groups, and the stress of feeling disconnected with the real world. This Australian comedy ran for two seasons and remains a favourite for thousands of fans across the world.

  1. Centaurworld

If the first two entries on our list combine comedy with drama, the third is sheer unadulterated fun. Centaurworld tells the story of a warhorse who gets separated from her rider on the field of battle, and transported to a magical, musical land of centaurs. Broadway stars fill out the cast and belt out songs like 'I Stealz So I Can Feelz' and 'The Ballad of Guskin the Gophertaur'. It's silly, it's fun, it's surprising, and it's weird.

  1. Fakes

Canadian comedies have started to hit the mainstream thanks to internationally beloved series like Schitt's Creek and Kim's Convenience. Next up is Fakes, about two teenage girls who start a fake-ID empire catering to the underage. The fun twist is that each episode is told from the point of view of one of the protagonists, whose recollections of people and events often vary in key ways.

  1. Crazyhead

Amy is attacked by a demon that nobody else can see. Luckily, she is saved by a demon-slayer named Raquel… and thus begins the epic supernatural romp Crazyhead, about two girls trying to fight the forces of darkness while becoming BFFs along the way. Critics praised the show's ability to subvert expectations in what could have been yet another Buffy retread, calling it 'A brilliantly bonkers blend of comedy and horror.'

  1. Feel Good

Comedian Mae Martin co-created this comedy-drama-romance-autobiography, which doesn't fit easily into any particular genre but does have some great laughs.

Mae (playing a fictionalized version of themself) is a former drug addict who meets a repressed Englishwoman while performing standup. Sparks fly, and the two fall in love in spite of culture clashes, disapproving parents, and Mae's past. Mae Martin was nominated for a BAFTA award for Best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme 2021.

  1. Cunk on Earth

Philomena Cunk is taking all of us on a journey through human history, from cavemen to the moon landing. She's incredibly dim, but that's not going to stop her.

Diane Morgan's gust-busting alter-ego has been around for years, but you'll never see her as funny as she is in this 5-episode mockumentary. She's especially funny to North Americans who might be inclined to assume that anyone with a British accent is intelligent – listen to the actual words that she's saying and you'll soon learn your lesson.
