7 Children's TV Shows And Movies We Think Are No Longer Okay For Kids
Don't let a captivating animation and friendly-looking characters mess with your head.
While many animated movies and TV shows are specifically designed for young audiences, some of these productions contain content that can have a lasting impact on children's minds.
From subtle moments in Disney cartoons to frankly awful storylines in animated series, here are 7 TV shows and movies that don't seem appropriate for kids these days.
1. SpongeBob SquarePants (1999-present)
Despite its initial appearance as a children's show, SpongeBob SquarePants cleverly weaves indirect references and adult subtext into its episodes.
Through subtle references such as toilet jokes and mistaken identities, the show embraces adult humor.
One of the more daring moments is when SpongeBob hastily changes the channel to sports when his pet snail enters the room, hiding the true content of what he is watching.
As adults, we love this kind of humor, but do children really need to be exposed to it?
2. Coraline (2009)
The story of a button-eyed monster who eats children's souls, lives in your house and can impersonate your parents — show this to a child and expect them to sleep in your bed until they grow up.
Thanks to this movie, some of us still have to check all doors and underbed areas.
3. Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)
This is a great movie, but it's definitely not for the kids. Remember the dunking scene where the shoe whimpers and begs for mercy?
Of course you do. We bet it's one of your childhood traumas, and that's why your kids should grow up before you show them this movie.
4. Mulan (1998)
A beautiful story that teaches young girls about courage and the value of family through the story of a powerful and fearless woman. However, in addition to the heartwarming moments, the movie also has heartbreaking ones.
The fact that Mulan was pressured to get married as soon as possible, or the scene where a Chinese village is burned to the ground, surrounded by the bodies of adults and children.
Yes, it is history, but let the children learn about it as late as possible.
5. Ren And Stimpy (1991-1996)
We mean, just look at them. Even for us adults, everything from the animation to the plot is disturbing. It's actually very surprising how Nickelodeon was even allowed to air this on the kids' channel.
That one scene where Ren pulls bloody nerve endings out of his toothless mouth still haunts us.
6. The Simpsons ( 1989-present)
The Simpsons show was once known for its edgy humor and controversial political themes, but the issues raised in the show always demanded more mature solutions.
Although The Simpsons is now considered a family show, its tone and style have not changed much since the early 1990s.
The show continues to highlight the issues of not-so-bright reality, and that is not what children of a young age should be thinking about.
7. The Witches (1990)
Maybe special effects weren't on point back in the 90s, but they definitely knew how to compensate for it with makeup. It scared the hell out of us as kids, and we would never watch it again even as adults.
