7 Brilliant K-Dramas That Lasted for 2 Seasons and More
The more the merrier.
The South Korean TV industry works by its own rules, creating genres nobody dared to even think of and mixing them in whatever order they like. The stories they choose to tell about are usually so thrilling, it seems like there’s a special gene of creativeness in them that the Western writers lack.
However, K-dramas are usually brief and last for one season. There are only a handful of episodes that consist of 2 and more seasons. And here we have 7 best examples of such.
1. Alchemy of Souls (2022 – 2023) – 2 Seasons
This is definitely one of the most popular K-dramas of recent years. It's brilliant in so many ways that it's hard to point them all out, but what amazes viewers the most is the intense and powerful writing and the excellent performances of the cast.
In a fictional country called Daeho, the love story unfolds between two souls, those of Naksu and Jang Uk. The chemistry between the actors, Lee Jae Wook and Jung So Min, was so strong that the fans were eager for another season of the best K-drama couple. And who doesn’t love a good time travel story?
2. D.P. (2021 – 2023) – 2 Seasons
At the center of this K-drama is one of the most popular actors in the industry, Jung Hae In, who portrays Jun Ho in a tightly controlled military environment filled to the brim with complex issues.
The drama is really gripping as it shows all the mental and physical limits a military man has to go through as the leader of the team that catches deserters. Although the two seasons aren't that long and consist of only six episodes each, it's definitely a good thing that the creators decided to do both.
3. Yumi's Cells (2021 – 2022) – 2 Seasons
Fans of Pixar's hit animated movie Inside Out will definitely be delighted with this amazing comedy. At the center of the story is a young woman named Kim Yoo Mi, who seems to be okay from the outside. But then we learn how her brain works...
It is controlled by certain cells, and each group of them is responsible for her major emotions. One day, however, her world collapses when she breaks up with her boyfriend, and this seems to have put her love cells to sleep for good. Now, after meeting this cute new game developer, she must find a way to wake them up.
“I thought it was realistic in the portrayal of how some people think, what emotions they act on, etc. Now I’m not the stickler of dramas being realistic but I think this one does offer it if you’re someone who looks for that. I thought the animations were cute and added a lot to the drama as they’re Yumi’s thoughts and emotions,” Redditor Snickersnerds said.
4. Penthouse: War In Life (2020 – 2021) – 3 Seasons
Well, if two seasons is something that happens quite often, 3 seasons is something extra for a K-drama. But in the case of Penthouse: War In Life, it was an absolute necessity.
The series revolves around the Hera Palace, a luxurious penthouse apartment with 100 floors. The residents of the palace have their own dark secrets and are absolutely unreliable, as they all have their own hidden agendas. This is especially true for the female part of the residents.
For example, at the center of the K-drama is Sim Su Ryeon, a wealthy queen of the penthouse. Another wealthy woman, Cheon Seo Jin, is willing to do anything for her daughter's future. But there are people who could never have been at Hera Palace if it were not for a great mystery...
5. Sweet Home (2020 – Ongoing) – 3 Seasons
Another K-drama that lasted for 3 seasons and has all chances to even continue after that, as it’s still on air, is Sweet Home. It’s actually a horror-drama that also manages to be an entertaining and even quite heartwarming watch.
At the center of the story there is a teenager named Cha Hyun Soo. He is a lonely kid whose family died and left him alone, so now he has to find a way to rebuild his life. However, everything got complicated when the people in Korea started turning into monstrous creatures…
6. Dr. Romantic (2016 – 2023) – 3 Seasons
For all the fans of medical dramas, here comes the amazing Dr. Romantic. It follows Kim Sa Bu, a young surgeon who has already proven to be excellent in his job. But after an unfortunate accident, his life changes in a minute, forcing him to give up his practice and move far away to a small village.
Changing his name and starting a new life, he decides to become the one who helps those in need. But a true hero never remains unrecognized for long, and he soon becomes the most honored man there.
7. Voice (2017 – 2021) – 4 Seasons
Now Voice was one of the longest K-dramas ever created, although it's a pretty exciting show. The procedural revolves around a mysterious serial killer who is responsible for ruining the lives of two different families.
The viewers are first introduced to Moo Jin Hyuk, a detective whose life has been affected by the killer, but then we also meet Kang Kwon Joo, who is looking for the one who killed his father.
They argue a lot at the beginning, and there seems to be no way for them to work together, but in the end they join forces to fight all the bad guys out there.
