While these episodes have their fair share of extremely dark and heartbreaking moments (as all TVD episodes do), they are sure to make for great holiday viewing!

The Vampire Diaries is probably one of the best examples of a show you can watch over and over again. Despite the show's continuity, it's always nice to revisit our favorite episodes, which are sometimes quite good as stand-alone stories. Their plots are always entertaining and full of pop culture references, and the atmosphere of an episode can always fit the mood.

It's especially great to watch TVD before or during the holidays! The show has a lot of great holiday-themed episodes that, despite the drama and horror, can make you feel a part of the festive extravaganza even if you didn't feel it before. And now, in less than a week, on November 23rd, Thanksgiving will come for all US residents, and Christmas will follow. Let's stock up on turkey and gravy, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie, start thinking about Christmas presents, folks, and enjoy the best holiday episodes of The Vampire Diaries!

1. Fade Into You (Season 6, Episode 8)

Season 6 is great not only because it still features Nina Dobrev as Elena, but also because it contains one of the best holiday episodes ever! According to the plot, Elena and Caroline organize a so-called Friendsgiving in their college dorm by inviting their friends. However, the fun dinner is interrupted by the return of Stefan, Damon, and Alaric, who are trying to get the Ascendant to save Bonnie.

2. Mommie Dearest (Season 7, Episode 7)

The unfortunate Stefan and Damon never seem to have a happy holiday, as a year after the above events, right before Thanksgiving, the brothers confront their mother, Lillian Salvatore, not yet realizing how manipulative she is, seeing her children only as tools to expand her bloodthirsty 'family'. Stefan and Damon thought it was all Julian's fault, like their abusive father Giuseppe, except the former was just a pawn in their mother's hands. 'Best. Thanksgiving. Ever,' as Damon put it!

3. O Come, All Ye Faithful (Season 4, Episode 9)

From Thanksgiving, we finally move on to Christmas. Mystic Falls hosted the Winter Wonderland charity event, but our favorite characters were in no mood for holiday cheer. In an attempt to thwart Klaus' devious plans, Stefan and Caroline are confronted by Tyler, who wants to sacrifice himself. Meanwhile, Elena and Damon head to the Gilbert Lake house to help Bonnie, and Professor Shane helps her brother Jeremy overcome his bloodlust.

4. Christmas Through Your Eyes (Season 6, Episode 10)

Bonnie, imprisoned in 1994, spends Christmas trying to brighten her loneliness with holiday traditions. At the same time, Caroline is lonely in the present, at Whitmore College, whose holiday is unexpectedly brought by Elizabeth.

5. Cold as Ice (Season 7, Episode 9)

Back to Season 7 and the Salvatore brothers' search for Julian after Lily's death. Despite the tragic events of the episode (including Caroline's incredibly heartbreaking monologue at her mother's gravestone, as well as Damon being trapped in a personal hell because of the Phoenix Stone, reliving the gruesome years of the Civil War ), there's a Christmassy feel to it, with all the trimmings!

6. The Next Time I Hurt Somebody, It Could Be You (Season 8, Episode 7)

As you may have noticed, no TVD holiday episode ends without a dark twist. Such was the case with the Season 8 Christmas special. Enjoying his last days of freedom, Stefan hosts a Christmas dinner with Caroline, the twins, and Alaric. Only an influenced Damon and Sybil show up, and the lovely evening turns into tragic chaos.
