6 Brilliant British Shows To Stream On Netflix After The Crown
For the real Anglophiles of our world.
With the incredible amount of shows available on streaming platforms today, it's almost impossible to decide what to watch next. Good thing you have us and our lists to help!
Over the past few years, British shows have found their way into many households as the main thing to watch. For example, one of the most popular is The Crown, the royal drama.
For the fans of period dramas, there are many other choices, such as Peaky Blinders or Derry Girls ( we will tell you all about them later), and the fans of comedy will find out that the UK also has a lot to offer.
So, here are six British shows you must watch on Netflix.
1. Heartstopper ( 2022)
Rotten Tomatoes: 98%
Despite the fact that the show's Rotten Tomatoes score is so high already, we believe it will never have enough clout. The series is a beautiful and thorough depiction of a queer coming-of-age drama with Joe Locke as the main character.
At the center of the story is the awkward, socially outcast Charlie, whose life changes after he meets Nick. The show highlights the importance of pure friendship and offers a gentle look at the blossoming of young love. The message of the show is that you must always be true to yourself, and we find that very appealing.
2. Cunk on Earth (2023)
Rotten Tomatoes: 100%
For those of you who thought that a one-star show couldn't be funny enough to never want it to end, we offer you Diane Morgan and her character Philomena Cunk. You've probably seen some scenes from the show on every social media site, as many hilarious interview moments have gone viral.
In the show, Cunk is trying to find out the truth about Earth, but the way she does it just makes you want to scream at her. The show is a series of interviews with experts who ask all sorts of crazy questions while wearing the mask of a talented critical journalist.
“As a fan of British comedy like Monty Python & Rowan Atkinson, this was a refreshing new batch of that style of humor that I’d like to see more of here in America. I’m also a big history buff, currently working on a degree in it. And while the events “covered” here are very broad and well-known, I think the subject matter played a role in my enjoyment,” Redditor movieguy2004 said.
3. Peaky Blinders (2014)
Rotten Tomatoes: 93%
Well, you've probably heard of this show, because there's no way you haven't come across the videos of Cillian Murphy as Thomas Shebly smoking in the field to a sad background song.
Peaky Blinders is a crime drama set in 1920s Birmingham about a gang of mobsters called the Peaky Blinders because of the razor blades hidden in the brims of their caps. The show is a dark fantasy that takes you back in time and gives you a glimpse into the twisted lives of the Mafia family.
4. Derry Girls (2018)
Rotten Tomatoes: 99%
This show is probably the best example of how well historical series can mix with comedy. At the heart of the story are six schoolgirls from Northern Ireland and we get to follow their lives as they maintain them during a difficult time in the history of the country.
The audience really enjoyed the show for many reasons. First of all, the characters are so likable that you can't help but want to follow them from beginning to end. Despite their differences, all the leading characters make a perfect team.
“The casting is so perfect, each character is unique and hilarious in their own right. Since it is set during the 90s in Ireland, there is a perfect mix of comedy and drama. I even saw recently that The Simpsons gave them a shout out in one of their episodes. Please check it out,” Redditor OdinMead said.
5. Bodyguard (2018)
Rotten Tomatoes: 93%
If you are in the mood for something a little more bone-chilling, tune into this brilliant show starring the beloved Richard Madden. In this series, he portrays David Budd, a former army veteran who is assigned to the British Home Secretary's protection detail after successfully thwarting a bomb attack.
As the show progresses, it becomes much more than an action-packed thriller. The series explores the gripping truth about paranoia, politics and deeply troubled people. And in the middle of it all is Budd, trying to juggle his own problems with the dangers of the world.
6. The End of the F***ing World (2017)
Rotten Tomatoes: 94%
For fans of dark comedies, this would be the best choice. At the center of the story is a boy named James. He is 17 years old and the thing is... well, he thinks he is a psychopath. So in order to embrace his darker side, he decides to plan a murder.
James thinks that killing his classmate Alyssa will help him in some way. Especially since the girl agrees to team up with him in her attempt to run away from home. But their trip turns into something neither of them expected…
