5 Worst Box Office Bombs by Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Ranked
The Rock is one of the most popular and marketable superstars in the world — and the holder of the industry's biggest flops.
Here are the five absolute worst of them.
5. Walking Tall
With Dwayne Johnson joining the cast of the 2004's Walking Tall, it seemed like the movie was bound for success: after all, it was a remake of an already well-established 1973 film of the same name.
But with a budget of $46M, the new Walking Tall only made $57.2M and turned next to no profit for its creators.
The thing is, the original movie was already forgotten since well over 25 years had passed, and the remake received rather underwhelming reviews on its own.
4. Jungle Cruise
Since the start of the Depp vs. Amber trial, Disney was trying to create a franchise to replace Pirates of the Caribbean, and 2021's Jungle Cruise was the company's main bet on this quest.
With The Rock as its lead actor, the movie was supposed to be a massive success — but unfortunately, it made just $220.9M with a budget of $200M.
For the most part, we have the pandemic to blame for Jungle Cruise's flop: it's not like people were actively going to cinemas at the time. The sequel is still happening!
3. The Rundown
Despite having a great star cast and largely positive reviews, 2003's The Rundown didn't manage to break even: with a budget of $85M, it made only $80.9M back, losing well over $4M for its creators.
Still, considering how The Rundown was popular with the audience, the crew behind it is planning to make a sequel soon.
We can't quite put out the finger on the reason for The Rundown's box office failure: the audience loves it, and the reviews were good. It shall remain a mystery, it seems.
2. Doom
Doom is a world-famous and incredibly popular action video game franchise, and for its 2005's live-action movie adaptation, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was the perfect lead actor.
The quality of the final product was called "mediocre at best," and Johnson's $70M Doom made only $58.7M back, losing way more than $11M.
Apart from everything else, the movie's timing was poor: back then, video game adaptations were largely hated by the public and no one cared much for them.
1. Southland Tales
If you thought that The Rundown and Doom lost a lot of money, let us show you one of the biggest box office flops in the entire movie industry.
2006's Southland Tales was supposed to be the beginning of a massive franchise, but after it lost more than $16.6M by making just $374,7K at the box office against the budget of $17M, those plans were quickly canceled and Southland Tales was forgotten forever.
Even at film festivals, this movie was getting terrible reviews — when it was released for the general public, people just weren't going to pay for it.
