5 Vampire Diaries Side Characters That Totally Steal The Show
Not everything is about those two dreamy brothers.
The Vampire Diaries is an excellent example of a supernatural drama show that you can just turn on in the evening and enjoy with a glass of something. The complicated love stories, the constant will they-won't they drama, the never-ending vampire battles. Yes, if there's a classic vampire show, it should be this one.
Of course, the main focus has always been on the lead trio – the Salvatore brothers and Elena. But the show's greatest storylines have been complemented by the compelling journeys and crucial roles of the supporting characters. Like these ones.
1. Lexi
Lexi appears in the show at the very beginning of it, in season 1. She is Stefan’s best friend and is the one who actually helps him in his darkest moments.
Her influence on Stefan was evident in Lexi's famous Vampire Diaries quote, "I was feeling epic." This statement underlines Lexi's importance, not only in Stefan's life, but in the overall narrative of The Vampire Diaries itself.
2. Sage
Sage appears in the show in season 3 and gives us a great fulfilling backstory that helps us better understand Damon Salvatore's character. She was his mentor, and after learning her attitude towards people (considering them only as food), we got to understand his ruthless nature… kinda.
3. Annabelle
Anna joins the show in season 3 as a vampire, the daughter of Pearl Zhu. She soon becomes close to Jeremy Gilbert, and later they start a relationship of sorts. She also teaches Gilbert everything about vampires and their nature… only for their relationship to lead to one of the show’s most heartbreaking storylines.
As we later find out, Jeremy's true motives were only driven by a desire to become a vampire and be reunited with Vicki.
4. Rose-Marie
This fearless character was introduced in season 2 when she kidnapped Elena in an attempt to trade her and her best friend Trevor's freedom. To be fair, she is sentimental and loyal, and despite her vampire nature, she is always reluctant to take the life of another human being.
Her impact on Damon’s character development is unmatched, as she helps him greatly to reconnect with his humanity.
5. Mason
Mason first appeared in season 2 of the show as a werewolf, Richard Lockwood's younger brother and Tyler's uncle. His story is kind of a sad one. At first he was involved with Katherine Pierce, who only used him to get closer to the moonstone. And at the end of the season he was brutally killed by Damon, who literally ripped his heart out.
However, Mason returns in season 3 as a ghost and tries to make Damon apologize for what he did to him. Now that alone is something!
