5 Times The Vampire Diaries Jumped the Shark but Fans Still Loved It
Bad writing is not enough of a reason to hate the show, right?
The Vampire Diaries remains one of the most popular TV shows of all time, but even a well-received series that is so loved by fans can sometimes be a bit too cringey. And like with any long-running show, it was just a matter of time for The Vampire Diaries to jump the shark.
The show does have plenty of storylines that can and should be considered as the ones that aged like milk. Still, even these unbelievable and “too much” moments never made fans hate the series.
1. Delena's Sire Bond
This was one of the most controversial things to happen to the show's main couple. Damon and Elena were written into a sire bond after Elena turned into a vampire. This storyline made their love story so much more complicated for no reason. Instead of adding something of value, the sire bond detail added issues of consent.
Because in such a bond, the sired vampire will do whatever makes his sire happy, even if they end up being the ones who get hurt. Changing this storyline would have greatly benefited The Vampire Diaries.
2. Rayna Cruz
Elena's departure from the show came as a shock to many fans. And to keep them entertained, the writers should have come up with something even more compelling than her storyline.
Instead, they introduced Rayna Cruz and made the Salvatore brothers part of her quest for revenge. Unfortunately, the Phoenix Stone subplot dragged on for too long, and Rayna's pursuit of the brothers only served to bore the audience.
3. Lily as Enzo’s Love Interest
For a while, Enzo was one of the best-written characters, and the storylines involving him were actually the most compelling. But at some point, it felt like the writers didn't quite know what to do with him, so they apparently thought that a romantic storyline would save the day and forced Enzo to fall in love with Lily, even though they had no chemistry whatsoever.
It was painful to watch because Lily didn't even love Enzo back, which made this unrequited love story completely unnecessary.
4. Matt and His “Superpower”
One of the longest-running and most illogical storylines of the series had to do with the fact that Matt was able to make it to the end of the series. In fact, he is the only mortal of the group to survive until the finale. And that's considering he had no powers at all.
With so many people dying in the show under extreme circumstances, it was just weird that the writers kept him alive.
5. Katherine VS the Devil: 1:0
Katherine was one of the show's most complicated characters. Fans never really understood who she was and what she was capable of.
For example, after the battle between Cade and the Salvatores, when they defeated the devil with no effort, fans found out that it was Katherine who was pulling the strings all along, which ultimately made her more powerful than the devil. That is funny because in a fight with Stefan, she went down without even trying to save herself.
