Love Island might look like a whole bunch of irresponsible fun from the outside, but in reality, there’s a set of strict rules that every cast member must follow — or else.

5. You Can’t Smoke On-Camera

It used to be different back in the day, but now, the Love Island contestants are not allowed to smoke in the villa at all: if they need some nicotine, they have to go outside where the cameras won’t see them. Also, they can only go one at a time to make sure they don’t use their smoking breaks to collude with each other.

4. You Can’t Drink or Sleep Too Much

Screen time is the only time that matters, so the Love Islanders are not allowed to sleep too long into the day. For that very same reason, the cast members can’t drink too much alcohol as that may cause incidents that will disrupt the filming of the show…or potentially lead to someone making really poor and uninformed choices.

3. You Can’t Wear Any Brand Clothes

Brand clothes and other fashion items can (and will) be seen as a form of advertisement, so in order to keep their hands clean, the producers prohibit the cast members from bringing in anything that has labels on it. Those who break this rule face the scissors as all parts of their clothes that identify the brand will be cut off.

2. You Can’t Disclose Private Matters

The Love Island contestants are not allowed to talk to each other about their casting process and how they got into the show — as well as other things that could give someone an unfair advantage. For the same reason, the cast members can’t interact with the outside world before filming so they don’t find info on their peers in advance.

1. You Can’t Use Most Smartphone Features

Even though every Love Islander has a personal phone, those things are severely limited in their features. Obviously, those phones don’t have access to the Internet or the outside world: they are mostly used to contact other contestants or producers and to take photos. Each phone even has a different time setting so no one knows the real time!
