5 Things About The Little Mermaid Remake That Shamelessly Differ From The Original
We would like to keep the story as it was originally created.
The beloved animated underwater world of The Little Mermaid is about to see the light in the live-action remake in days.
And while others think that the movie has already hit the bottom (in both possible ways) there are only 5 things that we wish the remake didn't change.
1. Visual Effects
With advances in visual effects technology, the remake brings the underwater world of The Little Mermaid to life in a way that was not possible in the animated version.
With the help of CGI and visual effects, it became possible to create stunning underwater landscapes and mesmerizing underwater sequences, but there is one thing that CGI dramatically failed, three to be more specific — Flounder, Sebastian, and Scuttle.
The most important friends of the redheaded mermaid look nothing like the original version. It's related to the fact that the director wanted to make the creatures more realistic, but in a fictional world of mermaids and sea witches, was it really necessary to make the fish, the crab, and the seagull closer to reality?
2. Missing Songs
"Les Poissons" and "Daughters of Triton" were shamelessly cut from the movie. This leads to the conclusion that Chef Louis and his famous cooking scene as well as an opening scene of Ariel's sister singing will also be missing.
In addition, the "Kiss the Girl" song that accompanies Ariel and Prince Eric's boat ride has undergone significant lyrical changes. Sorry, but rewriting the historical moments should be considered a crime.
3. Eric's Mother
While some of the crucial moments are missing or being changed, the storylines that were never meant to happen in the movie.
Prince Eric's mother, Queen Selina, played by Noma Dumezweni, will occur in the movie and will have a complicated relationship with her son, which will give Eric's character more complexity and reveal his traits more deeply.
4. Three New Songs
Was it necessary to cut two vital songs that raised an entire generation and add three new ones that no one knows about?
The movie composer revealed that Prince Eric will get his solo, we'll see Ariel sing when she finally touches land for the first time (it can't be right after she loses her voice, right?), and even Sebastian and Scuttle will have their rap moment. Lord, have mercy.
5. Ariel's Freedom
Okay, this one might not be so bad. In the original story, Ariel's decision to become human is driven by love for the man she only saw once.
In the remake, she doesn't want to grow legs because of Eric, she does it for herself and her will to explore her destiny. While it doesn't reflect the original story, in today's reality the motive that drives Ariel sounds more reasonable.
It's too early to jump to conclusions and it's better to wait until the movie premieres on May 26, but we all can all agree some things should stay unchanged.
