Fans loved The Vampire Diaries for its unpredictable and action-packed plot. But sometimes the writers frankly went too far, and the plot twists got just wild.

1. Elena turned out to be a doppelganger

The fact that Elena looked so much like the Salvatore brothers' past love was suspicious from the start, but the fact that Elena was literally Katherine's doppelganger shocked many viewers.

But what unsettled us all even more was that those two weren't the only ones. After Katherine, there was Tatia. And then there was Amara. It's probably a blow to the ego to find out you're not as unique as a snowflake.

2. Stefan was a doppelganger, too

Yes, Stefan was not unique. Before him, there was Tom, and before Tom, there was Silas.

While this plot twist may seem a bit far-fetched, the fact that Stefan and Elena fell in love with each other in each of their incarnations will melt the heart of even the most callous hater of romantic stories.

3. Elena’s mother had an affair with Damon

Let's face it, dating your girlfriend's ex-boyfriend is weird. But getting married and having children with your mother's ex-boyfriend? Yeah, that was exactly what Elena experienced.

Isobel was Elena's biological mother, and not only was she having an affair with Damon, but she was also Alaric's wife. Literally a mind-blowing twist. And not in a good way.

4. Jeremy cheated on Bonnie with a… ghost

Thought you were having a bad day? Just remember how Bonnie was cheated on by her boyfriend with a ghost. Can it get any more insulting?

This storyline may even surpass Isobel and Damon's romance in terms of insanity. At some point, Jeremy was able to see his ex-girlfriend Anna in ghost form and not only started having feelings for her again, but also kissed her when she was able to return to her physical body. And Bonnie saved Jeremy's life, by the way.

5. Caroline got pregnant with Alaric’s children

Sometimes the writers of The Vampire Diaries outdo themselves when it comes to insane twists. They proved this once again when, after Alaric’s wife was murdered, her children magically ended up inside Caroline.

To make matters worse, Alaric has been Caroline's teacher for much of the show. Yes, the situation is about as awkward as it gets.
