Not all science fiction stories are created equal, some end up failing miserably on all fronts.

Sci-fi is a promising but tricky genre, because writing a good and well thought-out story is no easy task.

While there are many absolutely fantastic sci-fi creations, there are also many mediocre and forgettable ones.

But these five are absolutely spectacular in how bad they are, and memorable in how they failed in almost every possible way.

After Earth (2013)

This disaster from M. Night Shyamalan is so boring you can't even laugh at it, unlike the director's other bad works.

Starring Will Smith as the warrior Cypher Raige (okay, maybe there is still something to laugh at) and his son Jaden as Cypher's son Kitai (nepotism at its finest), it revolves around a spaceship that crashes on Earth, long abandoned by humans.

The story is bland, the characters are flat, and this dark spot in Smith's career should be avoided at all costs.

Jupiter Ascending (2015)

Created by the legendary Wachowskis and featuring an impressive cast, this movie somehow managed to be a huge flop.

The actors either overact or underact, nothing in between, the plot is ridiculously stupid and the effects... well, the effects are okay.

Still, this story of a literal space princess is fascinating in how bad it turned out against all odds.

The Happening (2008)

Shyamalan is back on our list with this ridiculously bad movie about killer plants. The plot twist is dropped almost halfway through the movie, but it's so stupid that you don't even believe it until it's confirmed near the end.

Well, at least we can thank it for the iconic "What? Nooooo!" meme with Mark Wahlberg.

Battlefield Earth (2000)

Considered not only one of the worst sci-fi movies, but one of the worst movies ever made, this John Travolta starrer has totally earned its dishonorable status.

Based on the book by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, it certainly did nothing to improve the Church's public image. View at your own risk.

Ghosts of Mars (2001)

Even the greatest filmmakers sometimes make terrible mistakes, and this movie is a great example.

This massive John Carpenter flop tells the story of Mars colonists in the 22nd century who, as the name suggests, encounter ghosts.

At least the director's previous masterpieces did not allow this disaster to completely tarnish his reputation.
