5 Satirical K-Dramas That Don't Take Themselves Too Seriously
Self-awareness is key.
If you don't like a certain amount of melodrama, you should be careful when choosing a K-drama to watch. Although they vary in genre and style, some elements in the writing always remain the same. The good thing is that the Korean TV industry isn't afraid to laugh at itself where the jokes are due.
Here are 5 K-dramas that poke fun at K-drama clichés while making great stories come to life right in front of viewers’ eyes.
You Are My Spring (2021)
Although the show has a much deeper story and many more characters, one of the female leads, Ahn Ga-yeong, is an actress who stars in a period K-drama as a Joseon princess. If you're a fan of period dramas, the absurdity of her plot will probably make you giggle and re-think your favorites as well.
Because This Is My First Life (2017)
The main character of this drama, Ji-ho, is a screenwriter herself, and she has to work in an industry that lives and breathes clichés, no matter how stupid they are. The more the merrier, right? At least that's what her boss thinks, which makes the story a complete mess with too many things happening at the same time.
Business Proposal (2022)
There is nothing better than a little inception, and viewers will get that in Business Proposal. While the role of the male lead's grandfather is primarily to become his matchmaker, he also indulges in his favorite K-drama. Things get even funnier when you realize he's watching the show he's in.
Scripting Your Destiny (2022)
When writers work on their scripts, they are essentially playing God in the lives of fictional characters. But what would happen if an actual God decided to borrow some particularly good ideas and make the writer go through the trials and tribulations she had written for the heroine herself?
Be Melodramatic (2019)
All three main female characters are part of the entertainment industry in one way or another, so the show is free to highlight and explore the most hilarious and absurd details of it. An insane number of clever references and easter eggs sprinkled throughout would be a nice addition for all die-hard K-drama fans.
