Sorry for your childhood, folks, but it’s time we take the Wizarding World for what it really is: a dystopia that we were too young to recognize as such back in the day.

Aristocracy and slavery

Despite all the capabilities of magic, the Wizarding World still exists as a monetary aristocracy where you’re either born with money or you’re bound to stay on a 9-to-5. Not having money is a bad thing, but having slaves is a good thing, at the same time. Slavery is exceptionally common, especially among said aristocrats — but it’s fine since the slaves want to be slaves, apparently.

Judiciary and politics

The entire political system of the Wizarding World is designed to be tyrannical: the Minister holds the primary position on the Wizengamot and rules over it. At the same time, there are no juries or defense lawyers — and the Head of Wizengamot makes decisions based on bribes. What then? Oh, both petty thieves and murderers end up in the most inhumane prison ever!

Media? What media?

As far as we’re aware, there are no major media outlets other than the Daily Prophet in Wizarding Britain — and it is thoroughly controlled by the Ministry. The only other outlet we’re aware of is entirely homemade by a family of weirdos, and this basically means that the media is monopolized by the government. What a wonderful situation that has never led to anything bad!

Xenophobia and inbreeding

Almost everyone in the Wizarding World has some prejudices against Muggles, varying from “they’re primitive” to “you must exterminate them all.” As a result, wizards maintain their seclusion and rarely create families with Muggles…which implies copious amounts of inbreeding. All wizarding families are related, and this doesn’t appear healthy on any level.

Technology and education

In the Wizarding World, modern technologies are actively suppressed and the society is absolutely traditional. If this only had to do with using quills instead of pens because that’s what grandpa did, it would’ve been fine. However, the education young wizards receive is incredibly narrow and faulty, and it makes sure children can never fit into any other society or live among Muggles.
