These five take full advantage of the unique charm of stop-motion animation to make each of them feel special.

Nowadays, with the development of filmmaking techniques, stop-motion animation is not as popular as it used to be, as it has become rather time-consuming and difficult with today's easier alternatives.

Still, there is a certain charm to this style that makes every stop-motion animated project feel special, so it still pops up on the big screen from time to time, much to the appreciation of audiences.

Let's take a look at 5 great modern stop-motion masterpieces that emanate a warm, nostalgic charm.

Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

Wes Anderson is known for making truly cozy movies, and the stop-motion animated animals only add to the warm fuzzies.

With an all-star cast including George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray and many others, this story of a fox trying to leave his thieving past behind is a must see for fans of the genre and a great movie overall.

Coraline (2009)

Released in the same year as the previous entry on our list, Coraline has a completely different vibe, as the stop-motion animation can be not only charming, but incredibly creepy as well.

After moving into a new house, Coraline Jones, voiced by Dakota Fanning, discovers a small door that leads her to an alternate world where she meets button-eyed doppelgangers of her parents who are suspiciously too loving and kind than their real counterparts.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

While this genre classic was directed by Henry Selick, it has Tim Burton's fingerprints all over it, as he came up with the idea and produced the film.

It is perfect for both the Halloween and Christmas seasons, as the story of Jack Skellington's attempt to overtake Christmas intertwines the themes of both holidays to a charming result.

Kubo and the Two Strings (2016)

You don't usually see a lot of action scenes in stop-motion movies due to the difficulty of animating them, but Kubo and the Two Strings is a welcome exception to the rule.

Set in feudal Japan, it tells the story of a young boy, Kubo, who embarks on a journey to find his father's enchanted armor in order to protect his village.

Chicken Run (2000)

Aardman Animations has created many iconic stop-motion animated projects, including Flushed Away, Shaun the Sheep, Wallace and Gromit and many others, but 2000's Chicken Run stands out as their feature film debut.

It will also soon get a long overdue sequel, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, scheduled for release on December 15, 2023.
