Here's how we're surviving the current 'Droughtlander'.

  1. Russian Doll (2019)

Where to Stream It: Netflix

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 97%

Hard-bitten software engineer Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) is celebrating her 36th birthday in New York City. Only one problem: she dies at her birthday party. And then wakes up back at the beginning of the evening… and dies again.

Nadia meets a man trapped in a similar time loop, and together they must find a way to re-start their future. Although Season 1 has a very satisfying conclusion, the show was such a hit that it was followed up with an equally satisfying Season 2, where Nadia finds herself back in time and inhabiting her own mother's body.

Fun fact: Natasha Lyonne co-created Russian Doll alongside SNL alum Amy Poehler.

  1. Travelers (2016)

Where to Stream It: Netflix, Amazon Prime

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 100%

Four strangers, all of whom are on the brink of death, suddenly undergo a complete personality change. It turns out that all of them have had their consciousness taken over by 'travelers', agents from a distant post-apocalyptic future who have been sent back in time to try and avert a disaster for humanity.

The rules of their mission are complex and slow to reveal themselves, but critics continue to applaud the show's 'fresh and interesting vision'. And while the dilemmas of the agents are complicated, it's never less than a totally entertaining watch.

  1. Kindred (2022)

Where to Stream It: Hulu

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 61%

Based on the bestselling novel by Octavia E. Butler, Kindred follows the story of Dana, a young writer. Dana has uprooted her life for a fresh new start living in Los Angeles, close to her only remaining relative. Suddenly and without warning, Dana finds herself being pulled back and forth between her present life and a 19th century Maryland plantation. Needless to say, the fact that Dana is a Black woman makes this situation horrific in more ways than one.

If you're missing Outlander, you should check this one out; like the long-running Starz show, Kindred shows how the love between Dana and her husband Kevin keeps the protagonist going through horrific historical circumstances. Unfortunately it was canceled after only one season, but you can always finish the story by reading the equally terrific book.

  1. Paper Girls (2022)

Where to Stream It: Amazon Prime

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 87%

It's the 1980s, and four newspaper delivery girls are living normal lives in a Cleveland suburb. Their lives are disrupted when they get inadvertently caught up in a time war between two factions: those who believe time travelers should be able to influence the past, and those who think it should be left alone.

The girls find themselves hurtling around the 20th and 21st centuries, often coming into contact with their future selves and having to make sense of who they are and who they will become.

Like Kindred, Paper Girls was frustratingly cut short after just one season. However, you can always read the popular graphic novels to find out what happens next.

  1. Manifest (2018)

Where to Stream It: Netflix

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 72%

Luckily for fans, cancellation didn't take for this popular series – after the end was announced by NBC, Netflix swooped in so that the show could wrap up properly.

In this supernatural series, a group of 191 passengers take a turbulent but otherwise ordinary flight from Jamaica to New York City. Upon arrival, they learn that what has felt like hours for them was in fact five and half years for the rest of the world.

The passengers are bewildered to realize that they have been missing and presumed dead all this time – most of their loved ones have moved on. Meanwhile, many of them begin to experience visions and voices about events that have not yet come to pass.
