Comic books are much more than just superheroes fighting villains, and sometimes you may not even realize you are watching a comic book movie.

For most people, the first thing that comes to mind when they hear "comic book movies" is the MCU and DCU movies, which have become a pop culture phenomenon over the past few years, making crazy amounts of money and creating buzz with each new release.

But there are movies that you may have seen several times and never suspected were actually based on comic books, so here are five such examples.

Men in Black (1997)

When the first film premiered in 1997, it immediately captured the public's attention and spawned a whole new franchise that now consists of three "main" films and a spin-off, Men in Black: International.

But not everyone knows that it is based on a comic book series of the same name published by Marvel Comics from 1990 to 1991.

Oblivion (2013)

This sci-fi post-apocalyptic movie starring Tom Cruise may seem like a completely original film, but it is only half true.

You see, the script is based on director Joseph Kosinski's never-published comic book, which was then adapted into a screenplay by Karl Gajdusek and Michael Arndt.

Alien vs. Predator (2004)

The idea of seeing two iconic alien creatures clash in a deadly battle has been on the minds of fans since they noticed a Xenomorph skull in the background of Predator 2 (1990), but the crossover had already happened on the comic book pages.

The first Aliens vs. Predator comic book series was published a year earlier in 1989, marking the first time that two fictional universes collided.

V for Vendetta ( 2005)

Stylish visuals may be a clue for some viewers, but otherwise this action film set in a dystopian London seems like a rather original creation.

However, it is based on a Vertigo Comics limited series of the same name and was adapted for the big screen by none other than the Wachowskis themselves.

Snowpiercer ( 2013)

You may remember a recent TV series of the same name, but the first attempt to adapt the French comic series Le Transperceneige came out in 2013, and many viewers didn't even know they were watching an adaptation.

Oddly enough, it also stars Chris Evans, whose arguably most famous role was as Captain America in the MCU movies.
