A box office hit is considered a great movie, but not all great movies have done well at the box office.

Some movies can be designed for too niche an audience, resulting in them being misunderstood by the general public and failing to achieve commercial success.

Here are five movies that flopped this decade but were actually pretty good.

5. Chaos Walking

If you need any more proof that we're over dystopias in the 2020s, this movie is it. With a whopping $125 million budget, Chaos Walking earned a ridiculous $27.1 million.

Perhaps, part of the reason for its failure is the movie's deviation from the original book (the critics weren't big fans either).

Still, Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland make up an unexpectedly nice duo, making the adaptation worth a watch (so you can judge for yourself).

4. West Side Story

Steven Spielberg is a world-renowned filmmaker, and his name alone is usually enough to get the audiences into theaters.

That wasn't the case with 2021's West Side Story. Despite being a worthy adaptation of the famous musical that received critical acclaim and quite a few Academy Awards noms, it failed to at least break even.

With a $100 million budget, the movie brought only $76 million home. Still, it is a masterpiece, and we recommend it to anyone who cares for musicals!

3. She Said

Me Too may have been all the rage in recent years, but the audiences are apparently not ready to watch it unfold on the big screen just yet.

Based on the book of the same title, the excellent adaptation had everything it needed to become a success – a great cast, real-life events that made you shudder, and a satisfying good-prevailed ending.

It all wasn't enough, and 2022's She Said barely made a third ($13.9 million) of its budget ($32 million). The critics loved it, though, and you should check it out too!

2. Babylon

This epic period drama stars Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie in the lead roles, but don't be too surprised if this is the first you've heard of this three-time Oscar nominee.

While 2022's Babylon has cemented Damien Chazelle's directorial perspective as one of the most exciting in current Hollywood, it flopped hard.

A star-studded cast and an $80 million budget couldn't stop the movie from grossing only $63.4 million at the box office. Don't be discouraged by its low profits! Trust us, it's a total must-see.

1. Tár

The Cate Blanchett-led psychological drama was all the buzz in 2022, earning six Oscar nominations. Brilliant acting and a fresh story – what more could the audiences want in a movie?

Turns out, something was missing to make it a commercial success as its profits ($28.8 million) barely made up for its budget ($25 million).

If you are a Blanchett fan and haven't given Tár a watch yet, it's about time. You won't regret it, we promise!

Have you decided on what you're going to watch tonight? These are some great options.
