5 Movies So Scary Even Hardcore Horror Fans Will Jump in Their Seats
Jumpscares have become a rather overused horror trope by now, but these movies tried to make them fresh and unexpected.
Jupscares have become such an integral part of horror movies over the years that the absolute majority of them have at least one during their entire running time, with exceptions being extremely rare.
Of course, with such excessive use of the trope, many fans of the genre have become rather desensitized to them, making it harder for filmmakers to catch them off guard.
But these five movies did a relatively good job of setting up their jumpscares and making them unexpected and frightening. Beware of minor spoilers.
Sinister (2012)
This movie, starring Ethan Hawke as a true-crime writer who moves his family into a house where the previous owners were murdered, may not be the best horror movie ever made, but it has some great jumpscares. The lawnmower scare in particular had many viewers jumping out of their seats.
A Quiet Place ( 2018)
You might expect a movie about blind monsters with sharp hearing, which makes the heroes behave completely quietly, to be full of jumpscares, but A Quiet Place has surprisingly few of them. The ones that do make their way into the movie are great at how unexpected they are, which makes their addition totally worth it.
Hereditary (2018)
Directed by Ari Aster, who then solidified his success as a horror director with his next film Midsommar (2019), Hereditary is a unsettling story about a woman who attends her mother's funeral, bringing her family with her, and soon supernatural events begin to take place.
The movie is full of gross moments, has a dark, disturbing atmosphere, and all of this is spiced up with some well-placed jumpscares.
Lights Out (2016)
This movie about a supernatural being that only appears in the dark is perfect for jumpscares and it uses them a lot. At least a few of them will definitely catch you off guard.
The Conjuring ( 2013)
Directed by James Wan and starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, this film was the first in the series and is considered by many fans to be the best.
Vaguely based on real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, this movie did a great job of creating a scary atmosphere that included some great jumpscares. The clapping hands scare was especially great, as it was quite unique and unusual.
