Some plot twists don't ruin the mystery on a second viewing, but provide an even better experience with subtle clues hidden here and there.

A good twist provides a shocking reveal that excites the viewer and makes the rest of the story make more sense.

A truly brilliant one, however, has subtle clues leading up to it, making a second viewing even more enjoyable because you can see little hints of the reveal from the beginning of the movie.

So here are five masterful movie twists that make a second viewing even better. Beware of major spoilers ahead.

The Prestige (2006)

Let's start our list with this Christopher Nolan masterpiece. After it is revealed that Christian Bale 's Alfred Borden actually has a twin brother, the differences in character that vary from scene to scene become crystal clear, making it obvious when we see the "original" Alfred and when he is replaced by his twin.

Although this twist is so iconic that everyone knows it by now, it still makes finding the clues incredibly entertaining.

After learning that Bruce Willis' Malcolm Crowe was dead all along, you'll wonder how you didn't figure it out before.

The Others (2001)

This movie introduced another "they've been dead all this time" twist, but in a slightly different direction.

Starting out as a typical ghost story, it completely turns things upside down and makes you realize that the "ghosts" were actually living people and the family are the ones who are in the spirit realm.

Fight Club (1999)

Those unfamiliar with the original novel of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk were completely blown away the moment Marla called The Narrator Tyler on the phone.

However, once you realize that our hero suffers from dissociative identity disorder, it all begins to make sense, as we never see Tyler and Marla in the same room, along with several other subtle clues.

Shutter Island (2010)

Throughout the movie, you keep wondering why some characters seem to know Leonardo DiCaprio 's Teddy, and when the shocking reveal comes, the mystery finally makes sense.

He is not a U.S. Marshal, but another patient who has gone mad with grief, and the whole charade is an unconventional method of therapy.
