5 Marvel Movies That Flopped In Theaters, Ranked
You'd be surprised to see how many of them are truly great.
There are many factors that go into a movie's success (or failure) at the box office.
However, the general hope for every movie is to be profitable, especially for the big franchises, as the performance of one movie can dictate the fate of the next.
When it comes to Marvel, the stakes are even higher, as bad numbers for one movie can directly affect the budget of another.
Fortunately, in the case of the MCU, even the films that we now consider flops were the most popular at the time of their release.
With that in mind, let's find out which of them did so poorly that they couldn't even double their budget.
5. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
Box Office: $432 million.
Despite the poor performance of the first movie, Marvel Studios seems to have a lot of faith in this story as there is a confirmed sequel to be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton.
4. Eternals (2021)
Box Office: $402 million.
The movie was not well received by either critics or fans, but it did its job and tied Blade and Black Knight into the MCU for what will hopefully be a much more successful future project.
3. Black Widow (2021)
Box Office: $379 million.
Another 2021 MCU film that had many fans excited, it lived up to expectations but lost at the box office due to its sudden release on DVD and streaming platform Disney Plus.
2. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Box Office: $370 million.
It is surprising to see such a classic almost bottom out. Especially when you remember how much Chris Evans was praised for his portrayal of the most patriotic superhero out there.
Fortunately, the results of the first movie did not affect the rest of the films.
1. The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Box Office: $264 million.
Unfortunately for Hulk fans, this movie remains the biggest MCU flop from a financial standpoint. With a budget of around $150M, it did not even manage to double that.
