Those who say that “they don’t make good detective movies anymore” have clearly missed these five gems from 2022 and 2023. It’s time to fix this oversight!

5. A Haunting in Venice (2023) — 76/77%

Hercule Poirot, the world’s greatest detective, is exhausted from everything and rarely leaves his house. To cheer himself up, he joins a Halloween party in a palazzo to expose a fake medium — but amid the joyous occasion, a series of murders happen. With the palazzo cut off from the world, Poirot has to solve this riddle alone.

Staying true to the best spirit of the new Agatha Christie adaptations, A Haunting in Venice pictures a familiar situation, a locked-room mystery, that only grows more aesthetically pleasing and compelling with the beautiful backdrop of Venice. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie’s critics and audience scores are almost equal: 76 and 77%, respectively.

4. Vengeance (2022) — 81/86%

What’s worse than unrequited love? The love that gets taken away from you after you finally feel at peace. A young New York writer’s girlfriend was murdered, and he travels to the southern states to learn more and investigate the details of her death. But he’s no police officer, and he’s up against someone sick and capable of murder.

Vengeance has an authentic old-school aesthetic about it and relays the atmosphere of its locations on a different level. This 2022 movie proved to be a great mystery thriller that earned a rather high score on Rotten Tomatoes: critics rated it at 81% while the audience gave it a solid 85%. Deservedly so, may we add.

3. Glass Onion (2022) — 92/92%

Detective Benoit Blanc is sick of boredom during the pandemic since he can’t even leave his house to solve some cases. Fortunately, he gets a mysterious invitation to a filthy-rich tech billionaire’s private island, and that’s his ticket to excitement. Blanc expects a murder to happen on the island, and he turns out absolutely correct.

The second chapter — or, rather, a spin-off — of the world-famous movie Knives Out, Glass Onion further explores the charming personality of Benoit Blanc and his unorthodox investigating methods. Despite its higher stakes, Glass Onion received a slightly lower score than the original film: both the audience and critics gave it a 92%.

2. Decision to Leave (2022) — 94/85%

An investigation into a murder in the mountains leads a talented but troubled detective to the dead’s enigmatic wife. Little is known about her and she becomes the primary suspect; the situation only grows complicated since after spending time with the young woman, the detective develops feelings for her.

It doesn’t hurt to add some dramatic romance to a crime mystery, and Decision to Leave did exactly that. This movie is certain to tingle all the right nerves — both in your brain and in your heart as it did for the Rotten Tomatoes critics and audience who rated this South Korean gem a 94 and 85%, respectively.

1. The Last Night of Amore (2023) — 100/94%

A veteran detective is preparing to retire but receives a fateful call to arms as he’s writing his farewell speech. During a heist, his long-time partner and friend was murdered, and now, there’s no rest for the wicked. And the detective is definitely feeling wicked after having his last day in service ruined by his best buddy’s death.

The Last Night of Amore comes straight from Italy and it shows. The passion and energy in the movie are unmatched, and the dreadful plot thickens with each passing minute. This drama-thriller won’t leave you disappointed, especially since it has the best score on our list: 100 and 94% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and viewers, respectively.
