They’re just a work in progress.

Sometimes all you want to do is watch a story about two good people finding each other, falling in love, and getting the life they both truly deserve. But that is not how life usually works, and the people who make K-dramas definitely know that.

Sometimes one partner has to grow in order for the relationship to work. And they can start in a very dark and unsettling place.

Here are 5 K-dramas with great examples of personal growth from the romantic leads.

DaLi & Cocky Prince (2021)

The name of the drama speaks for itself, as the main male character we meet from the very first episode is far from being Prince Charming. He's very effective and materialistic, motivated only by money and success, and it's just lucky that Kim Dali shows up and teaches him a thing or two about what's really important.

Uncontrollably Fond (2016)

If you're looking for an emotional rollercoaster, this drama is for you. You may find the male lead a little unlikeable, especially with all the screaming and apparent lack of emotional control, but the story itself is so pure romantic that it will make you forget everything else. Just be prepared to shed some tears.

That Winter, The Wind Blows (2013)

Unlike many other characters in K-dramas, Oh Soo's questionable behavior actually has a tragic backstory. After the death of his first love, he became cold and had a hard time getting emotionally attached to anyone or anything. Everything changes when he needs money and decides to steal some from the legally blind heiress Oh Young.

Boys Over Flowers (2009)

Although the drama is very old-fashioned, it fits perfectly. The male lead in this story is a rich, privileged boy who bullies his classmate for being too poor. Although it's very hard to understand what she found in him and why she fell in love with him, it's nice to see how love can change the person with the worst behavior to become better.

Korean Odyssey (2017)

Does it get any more red-flaggy than the actual demon who wants to prey on you? Well, if there is a worse male lead, we have yet to find him. Luckily, Jin Seon-mi manages to trick him into protecting her instead, and he turns out to be the most attentive and caring love interest there is.
