5 Heist Movies That Shake Up The Tired Concept With Some Terrific Results
The creators of these five films took a fairly well-worn idea of a heist movie and turned it into something completely new and fresh.
We all love a good heist movie, where the protagonists devise an elaborate plan, assemble a crew of skilled individuals, and deal with unforeseen complications at the last second.
However, while most of these films involve stealing large sums of money from secure bank vaults (or other very similar circumstances), some filmmakers think outside the box and deliver fresh takes on a rather well-worn concept.
So here are five movies that have turned the heist movie concept on its head.
Inception ( 2010)
This mind-blowing sci-fi action film from Christopher Nolan asked the question, "What if it could be possible to steal information directly from people's minds?"
Dom Cobb, portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio, and his crew do just that, using an elaborate machine to infiltrate the subconscious of their targets and steal or even plant ideas desired by their clients.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
It may not be obvious at first glance, but Rogue One is actually a pretty decent heist movie at its core.
After all, the main plot revolves around a high-stakes operation to recover the Death Star plans from a high-security Imperial complex on the planet Scarif.
Ant-Man (2015)
Star Wars isn't the only major franchise to feature a heist story in one of its installments, as this MCU film felt quite refreshing in its departure from Avengers-level threats.
In his first solo film, Scott Lang is hired by a Hank Pym to steal a prototype suit that uses the scientist's groundbreaking shrinking technology.
Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)
Before Fast & Furious was even a thing, this Nicolas Cage-starring film combined heists with high-octane car chases.
Ex-car thief Randall Raines is forced out of retirement to steal 50 cars in just 72 hours to rescue his kidnapped brother.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
While it is a fairly typical heist movie, Honor Among Thieves stands out because it is set in the fantasy world of Dungeons & Dragons, spicing things up with magic, mythical creatures, and hilarious takes on typical role-playing game tropes.
Bard Edgin Darvis (Chris Pine ) and his trusty barbarian companion Holga Kilgore (Michelle Rodriguez) must gather a crew and rob a treasure chamber to get even with a former associate who betrayed them.
