Sometimes the creators just don't know when to stop, leaving the great shows a pale shadow of their former selves.

When TV show creators actually care about the structure of the story rather than keeping it afloat by any means necessary just to make money, they know when to stop.

Shows like Breaking Bad or, more recently, Succession go out in their prime, leaving viewers with a bittersweet feeling instead of pure disappointment.

However, this is rarely the case, as even the best shows can be needlessly dragged out well past their expiration date.

Here are five such examples.

The X-Files

Most fans have fond memories of Mulder and Scully's adventures, but the main story arc should have ended around season 7.

Unfortunately, the creators moved on and even tried to resurrect the series with two additional seasons at one point.

The results were extremely poor and because of that, fans are extremely cautious about the supposed reboot that has been mentioned by series creator Chris Carter.

The Walking Dead

What was initially hailed as a great adaptation of Robert Kirkman's comic books became one of the most notorious examples of the show dragging on for far too long.

When it finally ended in season 11, many fans ironically compared the show to a walking corpse.

Shameless (American version)

Before its decline, it was praised as one of the best shows of the 2010s, but eventually more and more viewers abandoned it.

Some fans feel that Shameless should have ended around the time Frank got his new liver.

The Flash

Like many other Arrowverse shows, the writers struggled relatively quickly to come up with interesting plots on a shoestring budget.

When the Crisis on Infinite Earths occurred in Season 6, The Flash was already on its last legs, and fans feel that such a major event was the perfect place to end the story.

The creators had other plans, however, which led to three more increasingly underwhelming seasons.

Supernatural

It felt like the show should have ended after Season 5, but unfortunately it dragged on for another ten seasons, losing a significant portion of its fanbase in the process.

Of course, there were occasionally great episodes, but Supernatural has never felt the same since.
