5 Extremely Unfair Movie Break-Ups Fans Still Can’t Get Over
“I should've left you at the flea market."
As art imitates life, it should present not only the bright side of it with its joys, but also dark and painful aspects of private life. And unfortunately, there is a place for wounding break-ups, which can happen even if the two were meant to be together.
Here are five examples of movie couples which split up despite their wholesomeness.
Joel and Clementine in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
First comes one of the greatest breakup movies, showcasing Kate Winslet ’s iconic character deciding to forget her ex (Jim Carrey ) with a special medical procedure, while we observe the flashbacks of their relationship and how it went wrong. It’s becoming obvious that their breakup is a result of their misunderstanding and childish ambitions.
Han Solo and Leia Organa in The Star Wars Franchise
The main sci-fi saga doesn’t lack a touching love story between Harrison Ford ’s Han and Carrie Fisher’s Leia, with their famous Episode IX lines “I love you / I know”, which became cultish. Fans couldn’t stand it when in 2015 with The Force Awakens it was acknowledged that the couple split up after they lost their son Ben to the Dark Side.
Mia and Sebastian in La La Land
One of the most unfair movie moments of the last decade is Damien Chazelle’s musical’ finale, when we see Emma Stone ’s and Ryan Gosling ’s characters being separated for five years, though gaining recognition in their careers. The scene’s montage allows us to imagine the reality in which they stayed together, and it tore viewers’ hearts apart.
Theodore and Samantha in Her
Quite a peculiar couple was shown in the 2013 psychological sci-fi, as Joaquin Phoenix ’s character is falling in love with an intelligent operating system, and while everything seems to match his desires, his computer lover decides to expand her horizons and to join other AIs, exploring the limits of their possibilities and all knowledge of the world.
Nora and Hae Song in Past Lives
Last, but not least here is an extremely heartbreaking pairing featured in last year’s award-winning movie, which presented two childhood friends (convincingly portrayed by Greta Lee and Teo Yoo), who appear in each other’s lives throughout their maturing and realizing they made a serious mistake parting from each other.
