Disney know their stuff.

When it comes to making movies, nothing quite beats the magic of a Disney film.

Whether it's the memories of watching the classics as a child or the light-hearted ease of watching as an adult, Disney movies are for everyone.

But one thing is clear: we can't help but get all teary when it comes to certain storylines. As Walt Disney himself said:

"Life is composed of lights and shadows, and we would be untruthful, insincere, and saccharine if we tried to pretend there were no shadows."

In this article, we'll tell you all about five Disney movies that made us cry – get your handkerchief ready!

1. The Lion King – Mufasa's death

At the top of the list has to be Mufasa's death in The Lion King. Most adults will readily admit this had them in floods of tears both as a child and still now as adults. Simply watching his face as he falls is hard to take but then when Simba tries to wake him, it's unbearable!

2. Up – Carl and Ellie's life together

Perhaps the most emotional opening sequence to any Disney film ever is in Up. What ends up being a fun watch starts off pretty tragically. We see the wonderful love story of Carl and Ellie unfold only to witness some brutal scenes of them being unable to have a child that is so dearly wanted. As time goes on, Ellie becomes ill and is unable to go on their planned South American adventure that they'd been saving for. The sequence ends with Carl standing alone with a single balloon at Ellie's funeral. And, well, if you're not crying by then, you've got a heart of stone!

3. Bambi – Bambi's mother dying

It doesn't matter when you first saw this movie, there'll be one scene you've never forgotten: Bambi's mother dying. What seems to be a cute story about deer makes even the hardest of adults break down. Watching this opening scene as a child was shockingly sad, but adults still wipe away a tear or two when rewatching it years down the line.

4. Dumbo – "Baby mine"

From the start of the scene when Dumbo waves his little trunk up through the bars, you know it's going to be one of emotion. The little elephant is so very happy to see his mother that he cries happy tears. As we see all of the other baby animals happily snuggling, it certainly pulls at the heartstrings to know that Dumbo and his mother will be separated after she's been chained in the cage as a 'mad elephant.'

5. Toy Story 2 – Jessie's Backstory

The scene starts to the song "When She Loved Me" sung by Sarah McLachlan and if the song doesn't make you cry, the scene sequence will. Essentially, it tells the story of Jessie's "kid" Emily growing up and losing interest in her. Later, she is found under the bed and picked up. Jessie is clearly thrilled and thinking this is going to have a happy ending. However, she ends up abandoned in a donation box. What makes this worse for adults is that it reminds us of all of the toys we've abandoned over the years!

And if that wasn't enough Disney sadness for one day, make sure you check out Miguel's song "Remember Me" in Coco and the moment when Martin wakes up in Finding Nemo to realize his wife and eggs have all gone except him and Nemo. It's safe to say, Disney really does know how to make us laugh and cry!
