5 Classic HBO TV Shows That Walked So Game of Thrones Could Run
HBO always known a thing or two about tension.
Despite the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the TV is still full of premieres this season. However, even if you don’t like anything that comes out today, you shouldn’t be too content-deprived. That might be your sign to turn to classics.
Here’s the list of five shows that you can watch on MAX today that made HBO as powerful of a network as they are today.
True Blood
If you’re a fan of everything supernatural, and still mourning the finale of The Vampire Diaries, this show is for you. Following the story of a telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse, the show explores the topic of fighting for minority rights by bringing vampires to the daylight and clashing them with everyday world.
Oz
This jail-cenetered drama captivated the viewers back in 1997, but would be just as interesting to watch today. Focusing on inmates and staff at the Oswald State Penitentiary. J.K. Simmons, Oz told the stories that were too dark, too gruesome and too violent for the usual broadcast TV at the time. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
The Wire
Although it didn’t reach the length of many present-day procedural series, it might even be for the better. Telling a story of the Baltimore drug scene from the point of view of both, law enforcement and criminals themselves, The Wire ended just as it started: intense and full of mindblowing twists.
Sex and the City
The very questionable sequel aside, Sex and the City will always hold a special place in all TV enthusiasts’ hearts. It was the first title to be brutally honest about the struggles that modern-day women face in their daily lives. From love and sex to family and jobs, the show managed to get almost every woman on board with its message.
The Sopranos
It’s almost impossible to talk about The Sopranos without mentioning another HBO-written iconic family, Succession ’s Roys. Though they held their business a little differently back in 1999, when the series released, it was just as loved by the audience for the drama intensity and the brilliant acting.
