The fact that Midsommar was inspired by a break-up romance is now starting to make sense.

The inspiration for a movie can come from a variety of sources, ranging from books and true stories to personal experiences and original ideas. But sometimes filmmakers can also find inspiration in other successful and popular works.

Here are 5 movies that were surprisingly influenced by other classic gems.

5. Midsommar — by Modern Romance

Ari Aster's 2019 horror film apparently drew inspiration from a variety of sources, including the 1981 romantic film Modern Romance, which revolves around a breakup.

Aster was going through a difficult breakup himself when the concept for Midsommar was pitched to him, and he decided to incorporate elements of a breakup story into the film. It turned out to be a great guide on how to avoid behaving in a relationship.

4. Birds of Prey — by Tarantino Movies

Director Cathy Yan acknowledged the influence of Quentin Tarantino 's films, specifically Pulp Fiction, on Birds of Prey's structure. The director explained that the non-linear narrative style and multiple perspectives found in Tarantino's films served as inspiration for the storytelling approach in her own film about the girl gang.

3. Eternals — by Man of Steel

Director Chloe Zhao has acknowledged that the character of Karis in Eternals is directly inspired by Zack Snyder's Superman. In particular, she expressed that Zack Snyder's interpretation of Superman in Man of Steel had a lot of resonance with her and her idea of superheroes.

Zhao appreciated Snyder's authentic and grounded approach to the iconic superhero mythos, which influenced her own vision for her film.

2. Dune — by Star Wars

According to Denis Villeneuve's own words, when he first saw Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope in 1977, he immediately fell in love with its sequences. Specifically, he was in love with the droid scene at the beginning of the movie. And exactly the desert planet of Tatooine, home to Anakin Skywalker, was the inspiration for the Dune sequences.

1. Luca — by Hayao Miyazaki Movies

Pixar's Luca was inspired by none other than the father of Japanese animation himself, Hayao Miyazaki, and his iconic works. Thus you can notice that the village of Portorosso in the Luca movie is a direct homage to Miyazaki's film Porco Rosso.
