Not every movie needs a sequel, and although many of them are released anyway, these five thankfully did not.

Hollywood is notorious for producing sequels to almost every successful movie, regardless of whether or not the original needs to be continued.

Luckily, sometimes these plans don't work out for various reasons, either by accident or because the creators realize their mistake.

So let's take a look at five sequels we're glad never happened, because you might be surprised that some of them were even considered.

The Departed 2

Nearly two decades later, The Departed remains one of the finest additions to Martin Scorsese 's filmography, and some fans even consider it the director's best film to date.

Given that the story ended with the deaths of most of the main characters, it is surprising that a sequel was planned, and apparently even the script was written, but thankfully, Scorsese eventually dropped the idea.

The Last Airbender 2

M. Night Shyamalan 's live-action adaptation of the TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender was originally intended to be a trilogy, with each movie covering each season of the series.

But seeing how awful the first movie turned out to be, fans sighed with relief when they learned that the sequels had been canceled.

Forrest Gump 2

Another cult classic on our list, did you know that the original novel of the same name on which the 1994 movie was based had a sequel? Well, it does, as Gump and Co. was published in 1995, one year after the release of the iconic film.

However, considering that the second book literally begins with Forrest Gump throwing shade at the movie, it definitely wasn't a good idea to adapt it, and thankfully it was eventually scrapped.

The Dark Knight 4

Although Christopher Nolan 's Batman trilogy ended on a rather controversial note, it was still a definitive end to the character's journey.

So when Warner Bros. asked the director to make another film to capitalize on the success of his previous efforts, Nolan wisely declined.

Independence Day 3

The original 1996's Independence Day has become a cult classic over the years, but releasing a clearly unnecessary sequel a decade later was already a questionable decision.

Thankfully, 2016's Independence Day: Resurgence was panned by critics and fans alike, burying the already planned third film.
