Considering Game of Thrones' popularity, it’s no surprise that numerous spin-off ideas have been pitched over the years. Some even made it to production but got canceled.

5. Flea Bottom, the King’s Slums

One of the most…questionable spin-off ideas for Game of Thrones, a Flea Bottom standalone series was supposed to follow the lives of the least fortunate citizens of King’s Landing who spent their lives in the infamous slums district. While there could definitely be some potential there, it’s still pretty clear why the project was rejected.

Despite the idea of a show set in the King’s Landing slums sounding less than appealing for most viewers, at least two notable Game of Thrones characters emerged from Flea Bottom: Gendry Baratheon and Davos Seaworth. Gendry aside, we wouldn’t mind learning how Davos’s path took him to the heights we saw.

4. The Lives of the Seven

As in any medieval society, religion plays a crucial role in A Song of Ice and Fire, and the vast majority of Westeros worship the Seven Gods. At one point in Game of Thrones, the Seven’s zealots under the High Sparrow even effectively ruled over the Seven Kingdoms — but we know little about the nature and history of their Gods.

One of the least orthodox pitches for a Game of Thrones spin-off suggested following the lives of those who were destined to become the Seven Gods. While it could have been a peculiar show (think The Young Pope meets House of the Dragon ), it was discarded as it didn’t sound nearly promising enough to invest in.

3. Bloodmoon: the First Long Night

The Long Night is a terrifying event, though not one everyone would even get to experience in their life. It’s something all the people of Westeros fear the most, but like all things, it has not always existed. Some time in the Age of Heroes, the first ever Long Night happened, changing the future of the Seven Kingdoms forever.

A show about the first Long Night called Bloodmoon was pitched to HBO and even entered production back when Game of Thrones itself was still airing. After the pilot episode was complete, HBO canceled Bloodmoon for understandable reasons: despite having a great concept, it had no source material and would have failed.

2. The Doom of Valyria

Ah, Old Valyria! The powerful free city ruled by Dragonriders, the native land of Targaryens, and the jewel of Essos that was lost forever after the Doom of Valyria — a chain of volcanic eruptions that destroyed the once prosperous region. What wouldn’t we give to see Old Valyria in its full glory, before the Doom came around?

The build-up to this tragic event would have made for a great TV show; it was pitched to HBO, too. Though the idea was rejected, we would have still loved to admire the beauty of Old Valyria before its fall, and the focus on Targaryens — the one House who survived the Doom — would have tied it together with HotD.

1. Aegon's Conquest of Westeros

Perhaps the most epic tale we could have ever gotten out of a Game of Thrones spin-off, Aegon’s Conquest could make for the perfect story of war and politics. Just want we’re here for, isn’t it? The tale of Aegon the Conqueror and his creation of the Seven Kingdoms is as legendary as it gets, and it’s bloody bloody in the right hands.

Unfortunately, a TV show about Aegon’s Conquest was also discarded by HBO: the bosses were not happy with the initial concept that went against George Martin ’s description of the great conqueror. However, there have been rumors about the potential rebirth of this idea; we might still be in luck if the speculations are true.
