5 Apple TV+ Shows That Are Not Exactly Horrors But Will Do Just Fine For Halloween
There are no screamers, but the atmosphere is eerie.
October is traditionally considered the month of horror, and to recreate the atmosphere of a scary holiday, streaming platforms are filled with new and old horror movies and shows.
If you're tired of blood and gore, we've rounded up the five best Apple TV+ series. There's a bit of mystery, but it's unlikely to make your hair stand on end.
1. Shining Girls
In this show, Elisabeth Moss shines as Kirby, a journalist who survived an attack by a mysterious madman who was never caught and left a huge scar on her stomach. Six years later, the police call her for identification: the body of a woman with the same scar is found in the city sewer.
This is a rare case in which the film adaptation is better than the original novel of the same name by Lauren Beukes, due to the atmosphere of constant hallucination and unreliable reality.
2. Home Before Dark
Nine-year-old Hilde, who dreams of becoming a journalist, moves with her parents to the quiet town. Soon she notices that the neighbors are behaving oddly toward her family. She investigates the case and writes about it for her own newspaper.
The best part is that this show is based on real events. Young Hilde Lysiak has actually been investigating since she was nine and has even solved a murder.
3. Сalls
Calls is perhaps one of the most unusual and underrated shows of recent years. The entire plot of the show consists of telephone conversations. Each character finds himself in a strange situation: one accidentally contacts himself from the future, another communicates with his long-dead mother.
The only thing that seems to matter in Calls is the sound: the series' visuals look like abstract computer graphics. But in fact, the image hints at plot twists and helps the viewer understand what is happening.
4. The Essex Serpent
This is an adaptation of Sarah Perry's neo-Victorian novel of the same name about widow Cora, who moves from London to Essex to investigate the mystery of a giant water snake. The locals believe it is the devilish creature, attacking members of the community in retribution for their sins.
This is a gothic thriller in which a criminally hot priest is played by a criminally hot Tom Hiddleston. So, you know, tune in.
5. Servant
The show was made by The Sixth Sense creator M. Night Shyamalan. The work of this director and screenwriter is largely built on sudden twists and turns, and Servant confuses the viewer more and more with each episode.
Sometimes it's even difficult to understand what genre this project belongs to: mysticism here is mixed with detective and family drama.
