4 Years Later, This Forgotten Sci-Fi Thriller Deserves Another Chance on Disney Plus
If you missed it then, here’s your sign to watch it on Disney Plus now.
The sheer number of movies and TV shows being released every week in the world is overwhelming, so no wonder countless gems often go unnoticed.
But if you’re really into the genre, you should do your own streaming platform-diving from time to time to see what you’ve missed; otherwise, you can never come across amazing sci-fi thrillers like this one which premiered 4 years ago but went under your radar.
The Dark Side of the Big Tech
Devs, Alex Garland ’s limited series from 2020, follows a young woman, an employee of a prolific tech company based in San Francisco. While she’s content with her work, she starts suspecting that her superiors are behind her boyfriend’s disappearance. Her little investigation uncovers a full-blown conspiracy when she learns about her company’s secret division that doesn’t exactly follow the law.
Devs’ take on the unregulated Big Tech shenanigans has only become more relevant in the four years since its premiere, but there’s much more to this show. It’s bold and ruthless, captivating and paranoia-inducing. Devs isn’t afraid to kill off its characters when the circumstances demand that, and it doesn’t feel either stretched or rushed.
An Instant but Overlooked Hit
Alex Garland’s limited series was warmly welcomed by critics and viewers alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, Devs boasts an 82% Critic Score and a 78% Audience Score; on IMDb, it sits comfortably at 7.6/10. Despite being well-received, Devs didn’t get nearly as much recognition as it deserved, especially for its approach to the genre.
Being a sci-fi mystery thriller, Devs does exactly what you’d expect of it — but subverts your expectations around every corner. Its general atmosphere mixes the raw power of a huge tech company and a sickening feeling of a small town ruled over by things you don’t understand, and the show’s willingness to dispatch its characters and reveal its secrets much earlier than you’d think keeps you on edge.
You can watch Devs on Disney Plus if you’re new to the genre; and if you’re a true connoisseur, you pretty much have to. It’ll be worth every second of your time.
