4. Unfrosted
Release Date: May 3, 2024
Genre: Comedy, Biography
Since ending his iconic sitcom 26 years ago, Jerry Seinfeld has maintained a steady stream of active comedy work, which has flourished in recent years thanks to the legendary stand-up comedian's multi-year deal with Netflix. And now, the streaming service added another Seinfeld's story, this time as his feature-length directorial debut.
Unfrosted is a semi-biographical comedy that focuses on the rivalry between Kellogg's and Post in the early 1960s, when the former decided to revolutionize the breakfast industry with its new Pop-Tarts.
How fascinating is the plot? That's an ambiguous question, but the cast of the upcoming comedy will certainly appeal to you, as in addition to Seinfeld, the movie stars Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Max Greenfield, Hugh Grant and Amy Schumer, with Christophe Beck as composer.
3. Thelma the Unicorn
Release Date: May 17, 2024
Genre: Animation, Musical, Fantasy, Adventure, Comedy
After producing iconic comedies like Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre in the 2000s, brothers Jared and Jerusha Hess decided 20 years later to try their hand at family animation in the vein of Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks.
Thelma the Unicorn follows the titular mini-pony, voiced by country singer and former Alabama Shakes leader Brittany Howard. So why is there 'the Unicorn' in the title? It's because Thelma dreams of becoming a singer, so she pretends to be a unicorn to get fame and attention.
In addition to Howard, the musical stars Will Forte, Jemaine Clement, Edi Patterson, Fred Armisen, Zach Galifianakis, Jon Heder and Shondrella Avery.
2. My Oni Girl
Release Date: May 24, 2024
Genre: Animation, Fantasy, Drama, Adventure
Tomotaka Shibayama started out as a cel painter at Studio Ghibli, working on Spirited Away as early as 2001, and after Ghibli as a key animator on The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Hellsing, and Blue Exorcist. Well into 2020, the highly acclaimed A Whisker Away, which Shibayama co-directed with Junichi Sato, was released on Netflix.
And now, 4 years later, the streaming service is set to release the animator's first solo feature-length project, the fantasy film My Oni Girl. The new anime follows a high school student who meets an oni (demon) girl and sets out to find her mother.
1. ATLAS
Release Date: May 24, 2024
Genre: Sci-Fi, Action, Adventure, Thriller
Jennifer Lopez in a mech suit. Seems like enough to grab the attention of both sci-fi and J.Lo fans alike! The movie was directed by Brad Peyton, known for the excellent, albeit canceled, Netflix series Daybreak, and given the success of Lopez's recent The Mother, it's likely that a new release will top all charts after May 24.
The plot will follow a deep bond between a data analyst and a rogue AI mech suit intent on destroying humanity. In addition to J.Lo, the film features Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown and Mark Strong.
