A cliffhanger is a technique that has been used by writers and directors for quite some time. Recently, ambiguous endings have become even more common in both auteur and mainstream cinema.

Here are four projects that hide so many questions that even multiple viewings will not satisfy your eagerness to know the answer.

4. Shutter Island

Leonardo DiCaprio 's character Teddy arrives on an island to investigate the disappearance of a psychiatric clinic patient. As the plot unfolds, it becomes clear that he is actually trying to find a madman named Andrew Laeddis who killed his wife.

In the finale, Teddy realizes that he has been searching for himself all along – he is Laeddis, and is responsible for his wife's death. Unable to accept reality, Teddy agrees to undergo a lobotomy.

Some fans are convinced that everything that happened on the island was part of a clever staging, and that Teddy is really a detective who was deceived. Martin Scorsese did not confirm any of the versions.

2. Shame

The main mystery of the psychological drama Shame lies in the fact that we do not know some important details from the past of the main characters.

It is obvious that some kind of tragedy happened in their lives, something broke the psyche of Fassbender and Mulligan’s characters, but the details are unclear, and therefore everyone is free to perceive the end of the movie in their own way.
Some people think that there is a clear breakthrough in the lives of the main characters, while others think that the vicious circle is closed again.

1. Drive

Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive is so stingy with revealing its protagonist's ins and outs that the movie doesn't even give Ryan Gosling 's character a name – both in the credits and in dialogue, he's simply referred to as Driver.

What motivates this mysterious defender of the oppressed? What is the basis for his cruelty and altruism? In the end, we don't even know if he survived his last fight or not.
