30 Years Later, 90s Action Gem Gets Dubbed ‘Better Than Mr. And Mrs. Smith.’ by Fans

Back in 2005, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith made a revolution in action movies, as it perfectly balanced between romantic plotline, fighting sequences and high-class comedy. And we’re not talking about its pop-cultural influence, as it established Pitt and Jolie's personal relationship that became a source of juicy gossip.

Surprisingly, 11 years before that, there was a movie, quite similar to it by its plot and style, but it’s obviously lesser known than Mr. & Mrs. Smith. However, some cinephiles claim it’s even better than the 2005 flick and that’s why it deserves more attention.

Its plot revolves around Harry Tasker, a U.S. government agent, who needs to pretend to be a salesman to protect his family. While his true occupation is forcing him to go through new dangerous challenges, his personal life prepares him for a struggle too.

The point is Harry begins to suspect that while he was trying to figure his spy business out, his neglected wife was starting an affair with a used-car salesman who pretends to be a special agent to seduce women. Thus, the real agent is tasked with saving both the world and his own marriage.

This movie presents an impeccable mix of the genres, as the action and comedy are pitch perfect here, and, more than that, one never overshadows the other. It was done so flawlessly thanks to the movie’s director, the accomplished James Cameron.

Apart from this filmmaker, the movie’s cast assembled a number of big names too. Here we have the Terminator star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, in the leading role, Jamie Lee Curtis as Harry’s wife and Tom Arnold and Bill Paxton as the movie’s main comic relief.

Titled True Lies, this star-studded action comedy contains presumably the best performance Schwarzenegger has ever done. It’s hard to imagine him being that funny, but the movie lets the actor deliver not only serious lines, but jokes too.
