It's always tough to sell something completely new to the fans of the classics, but with 'The Rings of Power', the fandom seems to be particularly irked with what's coming.

The upcoming Amazon spin-off for 'The Lord of the Rings ' titled 'The Rings of Power ' has been subjected to heated debates ever since it was announced. The Tolkien fans are known for their love for the original book series and readiness to scrutinize the screen adaptations.

The show has received plenty of criticism, particularly due to the creators introducing people of color into the Tolkien universe. This move alone sparked rounds of discussions regarding whether the world of 'The Lord of the Rings' even envisages different skin colors.

However, this is not the only thing that fuels fans' criticism towards 'The Rings of Power'.

First of all, the OG fans are irritated about how the show is essentially "pure fanfiction", not based on any John Tolkien's books, but rather written from scratch by modern creators.

As a result, fans argue, the upcoming spin-off is unlikely to channel the true Tolkien spirit, and therefore, many people refuse to even perceive it as part of the Lord of the Rings universe.

But what's worse, the show does not seem to be ready to fight for its place in the universe. Recently, the creators stated that 'The Rings of Power' is "not trying to compete" with the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy directed by Peter Jackson. Unlike the upcoming spin-off, Jackson's trilogy is appreciated by the Tolkien fans.

So maybe it would make sense for 'The Rings of Power' to try and actually compete with what Jackson did, but their reluctance to do so seems to disappoint fans.

And even when it comes to promoting the show to the audience that might like it, the marketing team of 'The Rings of Power' fails as well, fans argue.

According to critics, 'The Rings of Power' has chosen the wrong marketing strategy.

Expected to premiere on September 2, 2022, 'The Rings of Power' is going to take viewers back thousands of years before the events of 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings', to the times of Middle-Earth's Second Age.
