3 Iconic Horror Movies Tarantino Thinks Are a Waste of Time
Quentin Tarantino is an avid cinephile, who watched and commented on a great number of movies.
Generally he prefers to avoid negativity, even if it means avoiding talks about works of other modern filmmakers in public. As Tarantino himself said, "…I'm only forced to say good things, or else I'm 'slamming' someone. I don't want to do that."
But not always.
Over decades, he actually slammed quite a number of movies in his interviews, including even Natural Born Killers, for which he himself wrote the script. In particular, there are three iconic horror movies, which he vocally disliked.
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me
For starters, in one of his old interviews he was scathing about Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, saying that a director should not pander to studios too much, but:
"…if all you do is these little art films for 10 years for a million or two dollars, you're going to climb up your own ass. …after I saw Twin Peaks — Fire Walk With Me at Cannes, David Lynch has disappeared so far up his own ass that I have no desire to see another David Lynch movie until I hear something different. "
Wes Craven's Scream
Wes Craven's Scream became one of the most influential horror movies of recent decades, but Tarantino thinks that it did not live up to its potential, and the reason for that was Wes Craven's direction:
"I thought he was the iron chain attached to its ankle that kept it earthbound and stopped it from going to the moon." Tarantino believed that he could have done better in Craven's place.
John Carpenter's Halloween
Finally, Tarantino did not care for John Carpenter's Halloween franchise beyond the first movie. He hated the twist reveal that Michael and Laurie are siblings in Halloween II, from which most of the sequels continued (though the franchise had a reboot and a sequel line which ignores all other sequels since then). As Tarantino said in another interview:
"It's horrible that it does that. …he's just The Shape. There's something far more scary that he's going through Haddonfield and it's just her."
Of course, films Tarantino criticized in his interviews are not limited to the horror genre, for example, he's indifferent at best towards MCU. But this is a tale for another post.
