The second season of Netflix's all-time most-watched series, Squid Game, is coming back in the not-so-distant future.

The streaming platform confirmed it by posting a tweet with a picture of the game's cardboard recruitment card back in June.

The tweet also included Hwang Dong-Hyuk's statement to Squid Game fans, which outlined which of the characters would be returning.

Get ready for the comeback of Seong Gi-hun and the front man. Also, get ready to meet the new character, a mysterious Cheol-su.

"Gi-hun returns. The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming. The man in the suit with ddakji might be back. You'll also be introduced to Young-hee's boyfriend, Cheol-su. Join us once more for a whole new round," reads the statement from the show's writer, director, producer, and creator.

Lee Jung-jae played Seong Gi-hun aka Player 456, while Lee Byung-hun inhabited Front Man in the series.

Little is known about when Season 2 will premiere – after all, it took 12 years for the series to materialize and hit the screen. Back in May, the show's creator told Vanity Fair that he expects Season 2 to premiere in late 2023 or 2024. Hwang Dong-Hyuk had about three pages of ideas that formed the basis of his script.

He did not have anything else to say, but promised more games. "Humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again," Hwang said. When asked if Season 2 will have the same thematic concerns, the filmmaker said that the key question he wants to ask is whether "true solidarity between people is possible.

Speaking to Deadline on the red carpet at the Emmys in September, Hwang teased that the front man could be the focus of Season 2, while Gi-hun will be seeking revenge.

In another conversation with Variety, he admitted that he didn't feel like writing Season 2 all by himself like he did with Season 1, which took a lot of energy out of him. "I'd consider using a writers' room and would want multiple experienced directors," Hwang said.

Kim Ji-yeon, executive producer of Squid Game, told Netflix 's Tudum that the creative team is under a lot of pressure to make Season 2 even better. In particular, the creative team is doing its best to make the series "even more enjoyable for global audiences."

The dystopian K-drama was released on Netflix on September 17, 2021. It took only 10 days for the series to reach #1 in 90 countries, becoming the streamer's biggest non-English show ever. Nearly a month later, Squid Game has become Netflix's biggest show ever, surpassing the old record holder, Bridgerton.
