17 Years Later, Not a Single Show Managed to Outshine The Sopranos Finale
The ending of the legendary series couldn’t be more genius.
One of the most common thoughts about the TV industry is that even if the show is amazing and the stories are brilliant, with plot twists and jokes and everything, the most important thing is to end the show properly so the viewers won’t end up disappointed.
Needless to say, many of the great shows fall into the bad finale trap: for example, the sitcom How I Met Your Mother always gets criticized for that reason. But one show’s finale is still considered to be the golden standard in the industry, and of course it’s The Sopranos.
The final episode of the show aired on June 10 in 2007, so it’s been 17 years already (and yes, we too feel old). But the complicated story the viewers witnessed was just a lot to handle. The thing is, the final scene of the episode is actually pretty uneventful, but it is exactly what makes it so emotional.
In the last minutes of the show, we see the Soprano family entering a restaurant for dinner. Nothing important happens, but we feel the tension. Tony's every glance at the people, the furniture, his family. The sparks are flying, and we are desperately waiting for something big to happen. Especially for those who watched the finale 17 years ago, it was a torture.
“What people don’t realize is that for the last 10 minutes of the show, you got to be Tony Soprano. That’s how he lives every moment of every day. Studying who comes in, who goes out, who sits down, who goes to the bathroom. That’s every waking moment of his life! And for the last 10 minutes of the show, you got to be Tony,” Redditor Jawnsky222 said.
We think that the bomb explosion is inevitable, but then…
“Blackness. Nothingness. Then credits. 99% of people thought their cable went out. It’s almost a troll job. Almost. But it’s not. It’s something so much more and on so many different levels. This is the show that defied expectations. The Sopranos NEVER did what you thought it was going to do,” Redditor MrGittz said.
There's no doubt that the end of The Sopranos is one of the greatest artistic statements of the modern era. If you feel like giving it another round – the show is available to stream on Hulu.
