10 Supernatural K-Dramas to Watch If You Are a Fantasy Fan
If you are a Guardian fan, this list is what you need.
For those who thought South Korea only specialized in romance, we have good news. Apparently, the industry has a lot to offer fans of all things supernatural, from a little white love magic to the most paranormal thrillers you can imagine.
Here are ten we consider worthy of true fan connoisseurs.
1. Alchemy of Souls
The series premiered last year and has become the most popular South Korean drama on Netflix. The show is set in the fictional country of Daeho, which is threatened by the dark magic of soul alchemy. The characters are mysterious and complicated, and they are all connected to this powerful spell.
The story starts with the story of Nak-su, who becomes a placeholder for the soul of another woman who is much stronger and is actually an assassin. Later she becomes a servant of Jang Uk and they fall in love.
2. The Uncanny Counter
The story of the series revolves around a group of people who were demon hunters and called themselves "Counters." They were the ones who tried to protect the world of the living from evil spirits and dark creatures.
The ensemble cast of the series included several A-listers such as Jo Byeong-gyu, Kim Se-jeong, and Yoo Jun-sang. The drama is an excellent supernatural thriller that has it all: the mysterious plot, lots of action, and multi-layered characters.
3. Mr. Queen
Mr. Queen is a great mix of historical and fantasy drama in which the title character is transported from his modern life back to the Joseon era. Womanizer Jang Bong-hwan realizes he is trapped in the body of Queen Cheorin after nearly dying at work.
The drama takes the audience on an emotional journey as the characters' stories are laid out. The time travel elements take the series to the next level and give us the K-drama that is absolutely worth watching.
4. Strong Woman Do Bong-soon
The series premiered in 2017 and is a fresh take on the superhero genre. The drama revolves around an amazingly strong woman, Do Bong-soon, brilliantly played by Park Bo-young, who was born with Herculean strength. The show is a mix of comedy and action, giving viewers a hilarious look at how a super strong female bodyguard tries to save her boss and those around her.
5. Bulgasal: Immortal Souls
Another Netflix hit is Bulgasal: Immortal Souls, a dark and mysterious fantasy series with revenge as the premise of the show. Set in the Joseon Period, the show follows Dan Hwal, a military officer who was cursed to end up as a Bulgasal, a blood-drinking immortal creature (so, essentially a vampire), being on a 600-year mission of revenge.
6. The Legend of the Blue Sea
Nothing like this has ever been created in the South Korean television industry. The Legend of the Blue Sea tells the story of a mermaid and a genius con artist, portrayed by A-listers Jun Ji-hyun and Lee Min-ho. It has everything: the romance that Koreans are so good at, the quirky comedy, and the amazingly created fantasy world.
Apart from the plot, what viewers liked the most was the show's visuals and the chemistry between the main characters. It really makes you believe in real love, even though it takes place under unreal circumstances.
7. Happiness
Despite its sunshine and rainbows title, Happiness is a drama that depicts a post-apocalyptic world filled with bloodthirsty monsters. It is actually the result of a poisonous virus that has turned all humans into these dark creatures. However, there are some people in one apartment who are still human and are willing to do anything to stay that way.
The series brilliantly balances the topics of survival, morality, and human relationships and keeps viewers on the edge of their seats during all the episodes.
8. Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo
Another historical drama that mixes time travel, royal intrigue, and star-crossed lovers. The emotional rollercoaster that the characters take us on is so compelling and true to life that you might actually believe that you are in the world of the Goryeo Dynasty.
Audiences especially liked the complex plot of the series because it tackles so many issues at once, giving them a glimpse of what a historical fantasy can be.
9. A Korean Odyssey
The drama is a kind of fairy tale that focuses on love and loss between humans and mythical creatures. The main characters are the monkey king Son Oh-gong and a young girl Jin Seon-mi. He promises her the world, but ends up betraying her. However, life brings them back together many years later...
10. Bring It On, Ghost
The main character, Park Bong-pal, realizes that he can see dead people and talk to them, but he desperately wants that power to go away, so he makes a deal with a ghost. Later, at his haunted school, the guy meets the vivacious ghost Kim Hyun-ji.
They started a friendship, but later their partnership blossomed into romance. Their lives seem to be perfect, but what they don't know is that there is another evil ghost who decides their fate.
