Missed a quality scare? We have some right here.

Horror movies about Satanists, werewolves, and stories about ghosts unfolding on the screen — there are ten horror movies that will turn your evening into a real nightmare, if you have a subscription to Shudder, of course.

1. The House of the Devil, 2009

Poor college student Samantha is in desperate need of money and agrees to work as a nanny in a creepy country house. The eccentric owner, Mr. Ulman, asks the girl to spend just one night with his elderly mother. However, it soon becomes clear that Samantha did not end up there by chance: she is being hunted by crazy cultists who want to use her in a devilish ritual.

The House of the Devil is the third feature film from Ti West, director of the acclaimed horror trilogy with Mia Goth that includes X, Pearl and MaXXXine.

2. Host, 2020

During the quarantine, several friends decide to hold a séance at ZOOM. One of the girls begins to make fun of the spirits and brings trouble to the rest of the friends: for the next hour, they are terrorized by an offended ghost.

The action of Host takes place entirely on a computer screen and in just 57 minutes, the director makes the viewer look around nervously, in paranoid anticipation of the next jump scare.

3. Deadstream, 2022

Video blogger Shawn makes a night stream from a haunted house. More than 100 years ago, a lonely woman hanged herself there, and paranormal activity has been recorded ever since.

Deadstream is an excellent mockumentary made for pennies. A movie about a blogger in a haunted house keeps you glued to the screen better than multi-million dollar blockbusters. The most amazing thing is how the writers managed to keep the balance between scary and funny: Joseph Winter (who directed, wrote, produced and starred in the film) makes several hilarious cringe jokes as the awkward streamer, and the naturalistic format of the live broadcast makes you believe the creepy events are really happening.

4. Dog Soldiers, 2002

Neil Marshall's dark horror combines two main needs of the viewer at once: first, this movie about werewolves will keep you awake for the next few hours, and second, it will surprise you with the scope of the action scenes.

According to the plot, a detachment of soldiers lands in the forests of Scotland for training, but encounters fanged monsters. Hiding in an old house, the men fight the werewolves and try to last until dawn. And be sure, the local monsters will stay with you for days.

5. When Evil Lurks, 2023

When farmer brothers Pedro and Jaime learn that a demon-possessed Uriel has been rotting in their neighbor's house for almost a year, they turn to a large landowner, Ruiz, for help. The villagers have encountered the possessed before, but so long ago that many consider it silly legends. But because of Uriel, crops are not growing and cattle are behaving strangely.

A specially trained exorcist was supposed to deal with the possessed, but his body is found in the woods. Pedro, Jaime and Ruiz take the possessed out of the village, but an outbreak of an epidemic cannot be avoided.

6. Stopmotion, 2023

Ella has spent the last few years working as an assistant to her mother Suzanne, a stop-motion animation legend. The elderly artist is handicapped by arthritis. And when her mother suffers a stroke, Ella takes on her own stop-motion masterpiece.

The animator is helped by a mysterious neighbor girl who whispers the plot of a scary movie and suggests using meat from the fridge and then body parts from a dead fox to make puppets. Ella doesn't leave the house anymore and loses more and more of her sanity. But the animation is still missing something very important.

7. The Hallow, 2015

The idea that nature is protected by some supernatural creatures is nothing new in horror films, but the authors of the horror film The Hallow went a little further than the usual exploiters of images of forest spirits.

The main characters encounter strange phenomena after moving into a house in a remote Irish village, nature is not happy with them, and ominous branches and twigs organize attacks on the mansion and its inhabitants.

8. Satanic Hispanics, 2022

Texas police respond to a call and find a house after a massacre — 27 people are dead, only one is alive. The survivor says that a supernatural being is responsible for the mass murder and warns that something terrible will happen in the police station if he is not released.

Five directors (including one of the creators of The Blair Witch Project, Eduardo Sanchez) shot five creepy short films about the undead, mythical creatures and curses. All stories were filmed at the intersection of genres, so some plots will make you sweat, and others will amuse you.

9. Caveat, 2020

There's an empty and apparently half-abandoned house, with a young woman walking along the walls of the darkened rooms. Blood flows from her nose, and in her hands she holds a toy rabbit of demonic appearance.

Isaac, who suffers from partial memory loss, accepts a job from his old landlord, Barrett, to take care of his niece, Olga, a mentally disturbed woman. Barrett convinces Isaac to restrict his movements with a leather harness with a long chain that allows him to move around the house, but does not allow him to enter Olga's room. But this becomes Isaac's biggest mistake.

10. The Ritual, 2017

David Bruckner's movie is perfect for fans of runes and Germanic-Scandinavian mythology. Four friends decide to conquer the Kungsleden path in Sweden, but something keeps getting in their way: symbols on the trees, or a gutted elk. Once they get far enough into the forest, the locals reveal themselves: it turns out that the pagans living here are busy making sacrifices to the Jotunn.

First, a group of men dedicate the hike to their dead friend, then try to find out the truth, and finally lock themselves in a cage.
