10 Most Anticipated Horror Movies To Be Released in 2024, From Nosferatu to Beetlejuice 2
Are you ready for a fresh dose of horror?
If you've been waiting until 2024 for all-new horror titles, you might want to lower your expectations. Next year will be dominated by sequels, prequels, and reboots of already famous horror films.
1. A Quiet Place: Day One
Release Date: June 28
We'll finally learn how the mysterious sound-sensitive monsters came to exist in the world of A Quiet Place. Director Michael Sarnoski decided not to dwell on the problems of the Abbott family – there will be no familiar faces, except for Djimon Hounsou, the man on the island from the second part. The lead role will be played by Lupita Nyong'o.
The action will move to New York, which is suddenly attacked by blind monsters. Obviously, we can't expect an intimate personal post-apocalypse from the prequel, but whether it will be able to maintain its signature tense atmosphere despite the increased scale is still a question. In any case, viewers will not have to part with the "Quiet" franchise for a long time – the release of the final movie of the main trilogy (A Quiet Place: Part III) is scheduled for 2025.
2. Nosferatu
Release Date: December 25
The second attempt to update one of the main expressionist films about vampires, 1922’s Nosferatu – the last time Werner Herzog took on the classics was in 1979 (Nosferatu the Vampyre). The original Nosferatu is an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula. The author's widow did not give director Friedrich Murnau permission to make the film, but without thinking twice, he changed Count Dracula to Count Orlok and avoided a lawsuit for copyright infringement.
Director Robert Eggers is responsible for the new adaptation. Bill Skarsgard, will play the bloodthirsty count, Nicholas Hoult and Lily-Rose Depp will play his victims, and the local version of Van Helsing, Professor Von Franz, will be played by Willem Dafoe.
3. Return to Silent Hill
Release Date: TBD
Christophe Gans, the creator of the first Silent Hill, returns to the director's chair. Despite mixed reviews from critics and audiences, the 2006 film managed to achieve cult status. This time, however, Gans will have a more difficult task – bringing the tragic plot of Silent Hill 2 video game to the screen.
In the story, James Sunderland travels to the abandoned foggy town of Silent Hill, where he has been before. He wants to find his beloved Mary Crane, who sent him a mysterious letter.
4. The Watchers
Release Date: June 7
This is the directorial debut of Ishana Shyamalan, the daughter of the king of unexpected twists, M. Night Shyamalan. Father and daughter promise us a gothic tale with dark Irish landscapes and many mysteries. The main role will be played by Dakota Fanning.
The film is based on the novel of the same name by A. M. Shine. The car of 28-year-old Mina breaks down on the edge of a mysterious forest that is not marked on any map. While trying to find help, she discovers a bunker where three people are hiding. They tell Mina that the forest has made them its prisoners – every night "the watchers" rise to the surface and kill anyone who has not managed to hide in a shelter.
5. Terrifier 3
Release Date: October 25
The devilish mime Art will return in what the director Damien Leone says will be the scariest part of the franchise. Leone shared that he wants to move away from the supernatural and mystical approach used in the second part and return to the good old slasher.
In the first movie the crazy clown Art was defeated, but later it turned out that he was still alive. The second movie made it clear that Art is not a person, but some kind of evil entity. In the third movie, Art will terrorize Miles County on Christmas Eve.
6. The First Omen
Release Date: April 5
As the title suggests, the movie will be a prequel to the 1976's The Omen. This time, however, the story will apparently do without a demonic child with a heavy gaze – the creators say that the movie will touch on issues of a crisis of faith in the face of evil.
The First Omen looks like a hopeful attempt to revive an almost dead franchise. The last time The Omen appeared on screens was in the 2006 remake, which deservedly received devastating reviews. The 2016 show Damien is not even worth mentioning – the 30-year-old antichrist with the face of a fashion model has little in common with the famous horror franchise.
7. Beetlejuice 2
Release Date: September 6
Tim Burton is back as director, Michael Keaton is back as Beetlejuice. And also Jenna Ortega as daughter of Lydia, Willem Dafoe as an otherworldly policeman and a cameo by Johnny Depp. Yes, this sequel is going to be fantastic.
The idea of a sequel came to Burton in 1990 – he even asked a screenwriter to create a plot for a sequel called Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian. The Deetz family would move to the islands and begin building a resort on the site of an ancient burial ground. It is unknown if the current screenwriter used the Hawaiian concept, the one thing every fan wants to believe is that the sequel will be worthy.
8. Smile 2
Release Date: October 18
The first part of the story about a supernatural entity that causes people to commit suicide with a grin on their face grossed more than $217 million against a budget of $17 million. It's no surprise that Paramount immediately put a sequel into production, with director Parker Finn claiming that the sequel will provide answers to many of the original movie's mysteries.
The first film told the story of Rose, a psychiatric emergency room worker who meets a patient who complains of being haunted by an evil entity and later commits suicide.
9. The Crow
Release Date: TBD
The remake of the cult movie The Crow with Brandon Lee has been restarted with Bill Skarsgard in the lead role and Rupert Sanders in the director’s chair. The story revolves around musician Eric, who was killed by a street gang along with his fiancée. A year after his death, he is resurrected and uses his newfound supernatural abilities to take revenge on the killers.
Since 2008, several directors have expressed interest in rebooting The Crow, starting with Blade director Stephen Norrington. The last news about the remake promised a movie starring Jason Momoa, but for some reason the production was stopped.
10. Longlegs
Release Date: TBD
The movie is intriguing at least with its title, and even more so after finding out which actors will be starring in it. Longlegs is a horror-thriller with Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage in the leading roles. By the way, Cage not only played the main role, but also participated in the creation of the movie.
The plot tells the story of an FBI agent who has to catch an elusive killer. During the course of the investigation, a hacker has an encounter with the occult and discovers a connection between his past and that of a criminal.
