There's no genre of books more difficult to adapt to the screen than fantasy. After all, fantasy books are created by writers with the most outlandish imaginations, which makes translating their work to the screen an absolute nightmare for directors, production crews, and VFX artists.

However, Hollywood has never shied away from difficult projects and continues to buy the rights to fantasy films despite the many failures of adapting this extremely difficult genre.

Here are 10 terrible movies based on great fantasy books:

Let's face it, it's pretty hard to stomach when one of your favorite books gets slaughtered for the big screen, especially when the movie in question is being developed by people who have no idea what made the book great in the first place.

That's actually the root of most failed fantasy adaptations - the directors simply had no connection to the book they were adapting and approached the source material without love, which ultimately results in fans condemning the movie and refusing to see it in theaters, forcing it to flop.

Of all the entries on this list, two of the most painful flops came in the form of The Dark Tower and Eragon, both of which were based on well-received original fantasy books that proved a bit too complex to be faithfully adapted for the screen.

However, with Hollywood's persistence in mind, perhaps we will see new adaptations of these legendary books in the near future. Fingers crossed!

Here are all the films mentioned: Inkheart (2008), The Cat In The Hat (2003), The Hobbit Trilogy (2012-2014), The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones (2013), The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003), The Dark Tower (2017), Gulliver's Travels (2010), Eragon (2006), The Giver (2014), Alice In Wonderland (2010).
