10 Best K-Dramas Of The Year, According to Reddit
For those who already watched every K-drama marked “the best”.
The South Korean TV industry has been at the top of its game for the past decade, releasing many shows of different genres one after the other. There are many big names that not even fans of Korean dramas have heard multiple times, such as Guardian, Vincenzo, and Sky Castle.
This year has also been rich with brand new perfect K-dramas, and here's what Reddit fans have come to love by far.
1. Moving
The show that almost everyone in the thread mentioned as their favorite of the year was Moving, and we actually understand why viewers liked it so much. Based on a webtoon of the same name, this K-drama is the story of three teenagers who, along with their parents, suddenly find out that they have superpowers.
The show premiered on Disney+ in August this year and became an instant hit, breaking all records to become the most watched Korean show on the platform.
2. Revenant
Another 2023 K-drama that focuses on the supernatural is Revenant. The show tells the story of a young woman possessed by an evil virgin spirit and a folklore professor who does everything he can to save her. The overall atmosphere of the series is dark and even creepy, but it grabs your attention from the first second.
“This was really interesting because of the lore of different types of Korean ghosts that come up as they try to banish the main ghost and figure out why she was created. The main leads are Kim Tae Ri and Oh Jung Se, who are some of the finest actors around. It's spooky and scary, but it has a very cool message,” Redditor WaterLily6984 said.
3. Love To Hate You
The series was released on Netflix earlier this year in February. The premise of the show is actually quite simple, yet very relevant to the present day. The drama centers around a woman who lives to embarrass men, and a man who is so suspicious of women that he can't deal with any of them in his life.
Their paths cross and they get into so many war-like affairs that they almost start to hate each other, but at some point something changes in them that forces them to let go of their previous views on life.
4. The Good Bad Mother
Many Redditors also mentioned this drama as the gem of the year. It became one of the highest-rated shows in South Korea, and of course, it was a real commercial hit. The K-drama tells a story of a mother and her adult and successful son, who is left with a child's mind after an unfortunate accident.
What fans liked most about the series were the unexpected plot twists throughout the series and the perfect mix of humor, tragedy and mystery, with a dash of romance thrown in for good measure.
5. The Worst Of Evil
For true noir crime drama lovers, this show is perfect. The K-drama is set in the 90's and explores the life and affairs of an undercover cop as he does his best to bring down the huge crime syndicate responsible for drug trafficking in Korea, China and Japan.
Audiences enjoyed the action-packed, dark and brutal series about gangs, brotherhood and betrayal.
“Very dark and brutal. Lots of action and fighting, great acting and lots of twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat,” Redditor Training_Salt5814 said.
6. Crash Course in Romance
One of the rom-coms that was mentioned more than others was this hit series. The K-drama aired from January to March and was a commercial hit. It is a light and endearing comedy about a single mother, whose daughter is trying to get into the best college in Korea, and a popular and wealthy math tutor. Their bittersweet relationship is at the heart of the series.
7. Divorce Attorney Shin
As the name of the series suggests, it tells the story of a lawyer who specializes in divorce cases. And frankly, he is the best in the business as he manages to solve the problems between even the most complicated couples. Every day he has to face many messy situations, but as long as he has his two best friends, he seems to be okay. This K-drama has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so it's definitely a must-see.
8. My Perfect Stranger
An example of the time travel drama that fans of South Korean TV shows love so much, My Perfect Stranger tells two parallel stories that somehow unite into one big mystery. Yoon Hae Joon is a young TV anchor and basically a perfect human being: he is calm and kind, he helps people and avoids conflicts in his personal life.
And there's also the story of Baek Yoon Young, a young woman whose only dream is to become a worthy writer. Somehow the two of them ended up together in 1987, and that is how their journey began.
9. The Glory
The first part of the series was released just before the start of 2023, and the second part was released on Netflix on March 10 this year, and both received the best reviews from critics and viewers. The story of the show revolves around a young woman who was bullied so badly during high school that she had to drop out. Since then, she's been plotting her revenge on those bullies...
10. Twinkling Watermelon
“Personally, Twinkling Watermelon is the best one of the year. It hits all the right beats perfectly, giving one of the best combinations of romance, drama, fantasy and comedy I've seen in a very long time,” Redditor DirtyRanga12 said.
That's why we saved this one for last. The light-hearted teen drama with a time travel twist tells us about a kid from 2023 who is in love with music. Suddenly he ends up in 1995 and may become the reason why his real future parents will never be together.
