Let's face it - no one really likes remakes. All they do is ruin the original's appeal without actually adding anything new to the source material.

However, there is at least one genre where remakes are more than just a facelift: horror. Here are the 10 best horror remakes, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

As you can see - most of the movies listed above are not really remakes in the most popular sense of the word. They're more like reimaginings, and the directors don't really try to recreate the specific scenes of the originals, but instead try to recreate the mood and feel that those great old movies had. Such a practice is really welcome in the current age of mindless remakes, reboots and sequels, as the creative teams are actually trying to present something new to the audience.

The number one film on this list, "Nosferatu the Vampyre," is widely considered to be one of the greatest horror films ever made, because director Werner Herzog decided to put his own spin on the story of Count Orlok, rather than trying to copy F. W. Murnau's iconic silent classic.

Don't be afraid to watch these movies even if you've never seen the originals they're based on!
