10 Anime Series Weirder Than Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Expect the unexpected.
The word 'bizarre' has found its place in the title of Hirohiko Araki's fan-adored media franchise for a reason. While the synopsis of the manga and anime series based on it sounds pretty normal (an anthology following various members of a superpowered family destined to fight vampire-like villains), it may be the only sane thing about the universe.
Colorful characters in fabulously tight-fitting outfits, unexpected plot lines with ridiculous twists that the show plays with a straight face, hilariously weird powers like creating zippers everywhere, all have earned it a cult following and the status of the main meme in the anime world.
To the delight of fans everywhere, the show is still on the air and is currently in production for its sixth season, which is rumored to have a summer 2024 premiere date. Can't wait that long? Here are ten fan-recommended suggestions for anime with that delightful WTF factor.
Sekkou Boys (2016)
IMDb Rating: 6.1/10
Where to stream: Prime Video, Crunchyroll
Miki Ishimoto is a new employee at a pop idol agency with an automatonophobia (fear of human-like figures). Ironically, her first assignment is to manage a boy band made up of four - wait for it - Greco-Roman busts. Trust us, the talking and singing marble heads will keep you glued to the screen.
Onara Gorou (2016)
IMDb Rating: 6.4/10
Where to stream: Prime Video, Crunchyroll
Gorou is a deep-thinking, wise, sentient fart who helps high school students out of tough situations by teaching them valuable life lessons. Not wacky enough for you? Well, it turns out there is an entire community of sentient farts waiting in the wings to better humanity.
Pop Team Epic (2018-2022)
IMDb Rating: 6.9/10
Where to stream: Prime Video, Tubi
Looking for a show that will blow your mind with its insanity? Stop right here. The surreal misadventures of two teenage friends, Popuko and Pipimi, offer all kinds of crazy. It is probably the best example of absurdist comedy and meta-humor wrapped in an ever-changing animation.
Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo (2003-2005)
IMDb Rating: 7.1/10
Where to stream: Crunchyroll
Featuring the big bad who wants to make humanity bald and the protagonist with the golden heart and afro, who fights enemies with nose hair (yes, you read that right), this series is downright hilarious and serves as a great parody of shōnen anime. A real treat for all hair fashion fans.
Saint Oniisan (2012-2013)
IMDb Rating: 7.1/10
Where to stream: Netflix, Crunchyroll
It is a slice-of-life bromance story about Buddha and Jesus who come to the mortal world to share an apartment and live like regular dudes, drinking beer and playing video games. Despite being outlandish with its characters and plot, the series is highly entertaining and one-of-a-kind.
Paranoia Agent (2004)
IMDb Rating: 8.0/10
Where to stream: Prime Video, Vudu, Funimation, Crunchyroll
Paranoia Agent could easily be a David Lynch project in the world of anime, which tells you everything you need to know. Created by the wildly talented Satoshi Kon, it follows a series of attacks by a boy with a golden, curved baseball bat, and is basically a social commentary on a variety of issues told through a unique and mostly symbolic narrative.
Space Dandy (2014)
IMDb Rating: 8.1/10
Where to stream: Prime Video, Hulu, Vudu, Funimation, Tubi
The protagonist, a cocky and stylish bounty hunter with a pompadour to die for, travels the universe in search of the most bizarre species imaginable. His sidekicks are a robot and an alien cat, and his adventures are filled with pop culture references and wacky humor. Continuity is non-existent (characters die in one episode and are perfectly fine in another), and the level of insanity changes from week to week.
FLCL (2000-2001)
IMDb Rating: 8.1/10
Where to stream: Prime Video, Hulu, Funimation, Crunchyroll
A collision with a Vespa and then a whack with an electric bass guitar opens a portal on a teenager's head, and giant robots start coming from it. Sounds completely nuts? Well, wait until you see how the story develops and especially ends. Even after watching the whole thing and enjoying it, many viewers still don't know what the anime was about.
Odd Taxi (2021)
IMDb Rating: 8.4/10
Where to stream: Prime Video, Crunchyroll
The universe of Odd Taxi is alone enough to get you hooked from the start. It is a world of anthropomorphic animals that looks cartoonish and childish, but is anything but. The main character is an antisocial walrus-shaped taxi driver who gets involved in the case of a missing teenager.
Samurai Champloo (2004-2005)
IMDb Rating: 8.6/10
Where to stream: Prime Video, Hulu, Funimation, YouTube
A waitress and two master swordsmen travel through Edo Japan in search of a samurai who smells like sunflowers to the beat of hip-hop, beatboxing and breakdancing? Why not? Samurai Champloo bounces from action-packed to hysterically funny to sentimental to just plain bizarre, but it keeps you invested and gives you that unique feeling of faux-nostalgia.
