Young Sheldon Spinoff Has a Major Problem Now, but I Know How to Fix It
The recent casting update isn’t as exciting as it initially seemed to be.
There’s not so much time left until The Big Bang Theory franchise is back on the screens with a new spinoff after Young Sheldon wrapped it all up a few months ago, but now it seems there can be another major problem the upcoming show needs to fix.
Ahead of the launch of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage this fall, it’s been revealed that fans’ prayers have been heard and the Coopers won’t be going anyway since Zoe Perry, Annie Potts and Raegan Revord are confirmed to be reprising their roles.
Still, despite all the excitement that the series’ potential viewers may be having now, I fear one of the returning characters might in fact cause a big trouble for the entire spinoff’s successful run, and this isn’t even my guess, but a prediction made by The Big Bang Theory years ago.
Primarily focusing on Georgie and Mandy ’s life as a family and their own ups and downs, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is officially bringing back Georgie’s mother Mary, but I don’t think her role would have that much of a good impact on the overall storyline, at least throughout season 1.
The whole issue was first addressed in The Big Bang Theory season 11, where Jerry O’Connell’s adult Georgie confronts Sheldon after the latter accuses his brother of not having any desire to attend his wedding.
Georgie opens up about the real reasons for it, explaining that he had to take care of their mother Mary after George Sr.’s death and Sheldon’s departure for California.
This revelation does suggest that, despite coming as a side character here, Mary will still be on the forefront of the entire spinoff requiring lots of attention from her eldest son and thus intervening in the storyline just too much.
Don’t get me wrong, Mary is still an adorable character who did deserve to find some more consolation among her kids after her husband’s passing, but this time she in fact risks ruining the series’ entire idea.
Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is now supposed to let the whole story go further, providing a sneak peek into Georgie and Mandy’s life as a couple that has to deal with their own problems, not only with issues that their first families have.
Should Georgie indeed turn most of his attention to Mary while she’s still coping with George’s death, the spinoff will quickly lose its charm as an introduction to Sheldon’s brother’s rocky relationship with his first wife.
However, even with Mary’s presence on the show confirmed by now, I still think there’s a chance to limit her influence by simply limiting her on-screen time.
It would be too cruel to remove her from the storyline entirely since she is Georgie’s mother and now the only parent to navigate him through married life’s hardships, but she doesn’t have to become a third wheel in this marriage, and I really hope she’s smart enough not to be.
