Pirates of the Caribbean don't just show us how sea bandits perform; instead, it presents us with a mystical world full of mysteries and magic.

The main characters of the franchise have to deal with mythical creatures, the undead, and even a goddess at some point… And in the world of Pirates, it's just another Tuesday.

There's no law restricting humans from obtaining magical powers, too: we saw quite a few captains become far more powerful than your average sailor by being cursed or making a conscious choice.

Considering how many characters at least at some point wielded powerful forces or were affected by curses, the Pirates fan community is in a perfect place to come up with various insane theories.

Some of them can be very convincing, too! What would you say if we told you that Elizabeth Swann was… A goddess of death?

This may sound weird at first, but bear with us for a while: Reddit user shawsown's theory actually makes sense.

When we first met Tia Dalma, she was not aware that she was Calypso: she blocked away that part of herself and stayed oblivious until freed later.

As it turned out, she was the goddess of the sea, and Davy Jones, her ex-lover, was her consort tasked with ferrying dead souls to her realm.

Right, that we already knew. Where does Elizabeth come in?

It appears that Calypso's position is just as temporary as Davy's, and at some point, they both step down. Elizabeth becomes the new goddess as William Turner Jr. becomes her consort.

Now it's his task to ferry the souls; we only see him interact with Elizabeth after he takes over The Flying Dutchman but not with Calypso.

But why is Elizabeth the goddess of death and not the goddess of the sea like her predecessor? The answer lies in the nature of these two women and what they do to their lovers.

Calypso's kiss made Davy Jones become wild & untamable like the sea. Elizabeth's kiss brought death to the ones she kissed.

Every real or potential lover of hers died shortly after receiving her kiss: Nortington, Sao Feng, Jack, and Will all effectively lost their lives. Her consort is… a deadman, no matter how you look at it.

So, after the Battle of Calypso's maelstrom, Elizabeth replaced Calypso, and Will replaced Davy Jones. The new goddess started her reign over the seas: the goddess of death.
