Will Rogue One Alternate Cut Ever Be Released? Here's What Director Says

It's hard to argue that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was a critical and commercial success.

Following the story of a group of rebels that tried to steal the plans for the Death Star, the movie was rightfully praised for its gritty tone and epic action sequences.

However, for many fans, it simply wasn't enough, so naturally, they started wondering whether an alternative cut would ever see the light of day.

Rumor has it, after the initial cut of the movie was screened for executives at Disney, they were not particularly happy with the film's tone.

For them, it was way too dark and lacked the humor and heart typically associated with Star Wars.

That's why they decided to call Tony Gilroy, who he had previously worked on the spy franchise about Jason Bourne, for the rescue, tasking him with overseeing reshoots and rewriting the script.

And while he did a great job, fans couldn't help but wonder what the original outline of Rogue One looked like. Did it maybe have a better ending?

Was it a better take on the Star Wars universe, or a worse one? After all, many fans noticed that the trailer had many scenes that were not in the film.

Did the studio just expect everyone to not want to see them in the final cut?

Gareth Edwards acknowledged that reshoots brought a lot of changes into the original movie. However, he also stated that he was happy with the final product, and that no alternative cut release is even needed.

The Andor showrunner, however, has an even stricter opinion on a potential alternative version of Rogue One. Looks like the very idea of any alternatives makes him angry – sorry, Star Wars fans.

"Uh, no. That was the absolute best possible version you could ever have. Oh my God. No. No. I'm not going to go into any more detail.[…] That's the absolute best version of that movie that you could possibly imagine in the time that was given," Gilroy said.

Well, looks like it will be quite challenging to see an alternative cut of the movie when both Edwards and Gilroy seem to be very much against it.

At least we can rest assured that the final product was a collaborative effort that everyone involved was proud of.
